When the 7am knock came around Cara's back was aching and the room was still dark. She sat up then stood stretching watching as the door opened with the presumed Nurse Judy with a trolley full of pills and clothes. Cara took the clothes from nurse and put them on the bed as she was handed her morning pills. There was 3 different coloured pills and to which cara thought how was meant to swallow them without water.
She looked up to Nurse Judy and asked "May I have a glass of water please?" Cara frowned as she watched the nurse laugh. "Honey, use your spit" the nurse smugly said impatiently tapping her foot. She looked back down to her pills and thought on three. 1 2 3 . She tipped back the small paper cup and gave it back with one of her mother's infamous fake tight smiles. To which Nurse judy kindly returned and shut the door.
Cara looked to the bed where her clothes were and noticed a blue t-shirt, trousers and socks but no shoes. She looked around the small salmon pink painted room and even under the bed but still no shoes. She shrugged and got changed. Another knock was heard and the door opened to the again awaited Nurse Judy with a pair of laceless shoes. Makes sense Cara thought as she took the shoes and put them on.
She followed the nurse out the room and watched her lock it up wih keys. She looked around and noticed women all ages do the same thing from all across the floor. Nurse Judy walked toward the stairs muttering for Cara to follow. They walked behind about 20 other patients who were lined up with only one nurse. It must be because i'm new I have the other nurse to myself Cara thought. Walking down the stairs they passed which seemed to be only girl floors, Cara assumed it must be an all girl asylum.
But she wrong once they reached the bottom floor to the social room ; the line of women in front of her was standing next to a line of boys and men. "Nurse Judy how many patients are in this ward?" Cara asked as there was only about 40 of them heading to one room and about 1000 rooms with many floors in this building. "Not that it concerns you honey but there are 413 here in this hospital. If your wondering how all you'll fit in this room, there are 14 of the same."
As the line moved forward she and Nurse Judy entered. The appearance of it seemed homely to Cara, like an extended version of her living room. Apart from the 5 guards and 2 nurses watching everyone ; there was windows, sofas, tables, board games and a record player by a shelf of books. As Nurse Judy went to go stand next to the other 2 nurses Cara went straight to book shelf. She didn't think she would fit in here with the other patients as she wasn't crazy. Her fingers skimmed the book titles until she landed on a classic favourite that her class was reading last year. Alice in wonderland.
She grabbed it, sat down on a flowery chair with a purple cushion and opened the book with a small smile. As she leaned back more her eye's flickered across room and caught a pair of green ones staring at her.
