"Mom, tell me again why I'm going to Austria to live with a grandma I've never met?
"Calm down, Emma, It's only temporary" said my mother, Eva. "When we can pay for your basic needs again, you can come home. Trust me, you don't want to wear the same thing to school over and over again."
Fine, but why can't I go live with Aunt Robin, in Texas?
"Because," explained my mother," she is no better off than I."
"Oh, by the way, you will be attending school while you are in Austria." my mother said casually.
I sighed. why did life have to me so complicated for a thirteen (almost fourteen) year old in 2018. I mean, people called this the golden age! Well, at least for those who were already rich when our current president came into power.
My mother came back up the stairs with some of my clean laundry.
"Remember, your flight is from Cleveland, Ohio, to Vienna, Austria," she reminded me.
"I know, I even wrote it on my arm. Seven different places!"
I looked up from my arm and noticed that she wasn't holding my favorite jeans.
"Hey mom, where are my favorite jeans?"
"You mean the ones that have rips in three different places?" my mother inquired.
"Yes mom," I said in the same sarcastic tone. "Those are the ones."
"You can't wear those to your grandmother's mansion" my mother said agast.
"Fine, but what am I supposed to wear?"
"Here" my mom gushed. "try this on. It was my dress when I was your age"
I could tell that she was extremely excited, so I tried it on. Let me tell you, that thing was as stiff as a board and really itchy! But I told my mother I would at least take it. However, I packed my jeans when my mom wasn't looking.
