The Keeper of the Flame
I looked him straight in the eyes, he smiled as if it is going to be easy to wipe me out, but I kept a straight face. Tim, the brunette boy was known for being the smart class clown. I think he is in his third year, so he must have already gotten his wings, no wonder he thinks he can take me down easily. But over the past year I have become stronger than when I first started off at Elzora. I remember the first day I walked in here lost and so confused as to what life is about ever since the realms of demons came to my reality. I was a fool but since that day I have become stronger.
We bowed our heads in respect, and then took our ready positions on the practice ring in the gym of the school. The class surrounding us. This is it, the moment I thought I would finally grow even more powerful than yesterday. I am going to take Tim down.
Much to my disappointment I am pinned down, my skull digging out of my skin, and I don't even know where my hands are. His knee against my back, I can feel the demon ripping out my insides slowly, and I can't move nor breathe. Then I felt it, no it can't happen now. I can feel my body lose the grasp on my soul. It's happening again. No! I yelled in my head forgetting about Tim, the class, and Sir Synis. Right now it's only me fighting for my soul. I can't let it happen here, everyone would take me as a freak. But it's too late now.
It was at night, I couldn't sleep. It was too hot in my room, like a growing fire as I lay on my bed. I had finally given up and just sat there, looking up at the ceiling and squeezing my eyes shut feeling exhausted, like I had just ran the entire day, and am given the night to rest. I looked down and I am no longer in my room, only the fire surrounding me, growing. I get up in panic, feeling my heart race and pace inside my chest, ready to rip out of my ribs. I got up running for the door to escape my death but I am only attacked by more fire. I let out a scream but then realized it was only my brain that had reacted, not my body. There was not a scratch or burn mark on me. I thought it was impossible to defy the physical laws of fire like that. But how? I thought. I stretched out my hand into the fire once I had gotten up. Nothing happened, it was soft and warm under my palm. Then without a trace it was gone, nothing had burned and no there was smoke. All that remained was a small flame floating to me from the centre of my room. I backed away from it slowly feeling the beads of sweat roll down my face, my muscles tensed. It got closer as I backed away until I hit the wall. I raised my hand to touch it with my finger and as I did it turned to burning ashes that crawled up my hand to my arms and disappeared under the tank top I was wearing. Only leaving a mark on my arm of a flame.
“Ms. Akira Ember!” I heard the voice yell my name as I stood up no longer pinned down by Tim. I looked shit scared at his body limp on the ground off the tournament ring. The wall with a huge hole and Tim in the next room. I felt the eyes of the class looking at me, their faces horrified, some even terrified. My hand sticking out in front of me. I didn't do this, no. It wasn't me. I...
“Ember!” I looked at Sir confused. His hand sticking out in front of him, pointing at me. “With me, to Ms. McGummery's office. Now!”
I walked behind Synis just lost in my thoughts, trying to remember what I did to Tim. “Wait here, while I have a quick word with Ms. McGummery.” he said walking through the doors to her office. Once the doors are shut I walk in closer, leaning in with my ear. I couldn't make out the full sentences but I caught some words.
“Forbidden powers... couldn't hear... eyes changing...” I had no idea what he was blabbering on about. I quickly straightened myself out taking a gulp when he opened the doors walking out, giving me a quick nod to Ms. McGummery. I looked behind him, the principal's back to the door. Synis took off muttering something under his breathe. I waited until he turned the corner in the grand hall of the school. I walked into her room and the doors shut once I was inside.
