I've always been obsessed with zombies ever since I walked in on my brother watching 'Resident Evil Apocalypse' at the tender age of five. You would think a five year old would scream and run, but no- I sat and stared at the screen as Milla Jovovich's character bravely battled zombie dogs and all I could think was 'That must be so COOL!'
I wanted to do that, fight the monsters and save the scared little girl in the school, even though she was older than me at the time! I remember annoying my big brother for years after that, asking constantly for him to put zombie films on. He always ended up caving in and letting me watch them with him (partly because he knew i would scream the house down if he didn't agree) but because it was as much a dream of his as it was mine.
15 years on we were still obsessed, even though he had two kids and a fiancee, and i was in University and had a part time job to go with it. He liked to draw and paint in his spare time, but he also liked making things. He developed a obsession with Martial Arts and then decided he wanted nunchucks... so he made nunchucks out of cardboard and gaffer tape (they actually turned out pretty well in the end, i was slightly dubious but after accidentally hitting myself in the face with them a couple of times i agreed they were awesome)
He loved The Walking Dead, as did I, and made himself a crossbow out of wood (yet again, awesome) and taught me how to shoot it.
We laughed as we aimed our bows at tin cans and bottles, and not once did it cross our minds that in the near future we could be aiming these at people's heads.
But fast forward to December 2015, and we were doing exactly that.
