The crowd isn't too much considering it only 10 in the morning. Passing a few of my regular guests, I give them my best smile as they wave at me. I love how people who are regular to this place actually try to remember the names and the faces.
There is this man, George, who is really old probably in late fifties and he is the most amazing man I've ever known. George does not visit the diner very often, but the few times he did, I had the pleasure of knowing him. I let out an inaudible giggle when I think what the names he would call me by, because his memory wasn't too good. He would apologize for forgetting my name, over and over again. But the thing about George that really got me was that one day when he asked for a napkin and a pen. I asked him what he was doing; he just smiled at me and let out a sigh, shifting awkwardly in his chair.
"It's my wife's birthday.", he had told me. I grinned at the eternal love, the stories we wish were true for us. I nodded, "Congrats! How long have you guys been together?"
"Oh honey, it's a long story.", he was smiling while looking out the window.
I had looked around to make sure no one bothered, I grabbed a seat next to him, "I think I can manage."
George smiled at me, taking his glasses off, "Pattie and I were high school sweethearts, we worked our relationship for 6 good years and then we got married, making sure that we were meant to it.", he chuckled, "Though a lot of my friends told me I was taking too long to get a hold of her, but I wanted to wait, I wanted to hang around and see if we would work and we did."
The way his expressions were changing I just knew his love story was the best of all. I smiled at him, making my elbows rest over his table, waiting for him to continue. He sighed, "I ended up having the best 4 years of marriage with Pattie."
My heart had stopped beating and I furrowed my brows. He nodded, and a soft smile played over his lips, "Pattie passed away, she was fighting cancer but she failed.", he looks at those papers and swallows the lump in his throat, "I write to her every year."
I looked at the paper, the paper he had scribbled something over, it was a napkin but he turned that into a paper after he wrote his note to his wife in heaven, "Do you mind?"
George slid the paper towards me and those words brought tears to my eyes,
Dear Pattie,
Happy birthday! I just want you to know that I love you more than I ever did, and those memories you gave me are still engraved inside my head. You're the only girl who has ever ruled my mind and heart and I don't think that place would ever be given to someone else. Hey, don't you laugh, I'm still a very handsome man and I can get girls...I just don't want to because I'm still married to you. I miss you, honey.
People might have judged this as him not being moved on, but he told me he didn't want to. He questioned me about how could he ever if all he did was love her for half of his life.
