Sofia Grace did not want to be a trophy wife. She didn't want to settle down in a two-story house with a white picket fence.
She wanted to be a scientist, and with a PhD in Genetics, she's willing to work with anyone for the right price.
Hydra approaches her before their fall, and she accepts, just wanting to get a job. Even if she doesn't completely know what she's supposed to be doing.
Hydra falls, and she's stuck at home with her mother basically chasing her with a dress and china patterns.
After facing discrimination when she joins S.H.I.E.L.D, she wants to quit, but is brought on to bigger and scarier projects by Arnim Zola himself.
From there it's only gets darker and after her betrayal, she's going to realize:
There are things worse than death.
