Chapter One
Virginia"When are you gonna find a boyfriend, Tess?" My mother nagged at me for the fifth time this week.
"I don't need a boyfriend mum, I'm fine on my own." I rolled my eyes, repeating the same thing I had for months.
"Or a girlfriend if that's the team you bat for. Mummy isn't going to judge you.""Mum! I'm not a lesbian. I have been with men"
"Yeah, Tom... That was two years ago! You need to get back in the game. You're not getting any younger you know" mum reminds me
"I am 24 years old, don't worry about me. Worry about yourself. That reminds me, have you met anyone recently?" I ask my mother. It had been 4 years since my Dad had passed and it wasn't getting any easier for Mum.
"Oh Tess don't start. I'm fine Hun, honestly, I don't need anyone."
I roll my eyes at her. She sounds just like me."If you say so mum."
My mother was only 55 but looked that of 40. She's still young and could do with meeting someone to make her happy again. My eyes drift over to the photos on the mantle piece. A smile is brought to my face as I think of all those memories. Days at the park as a kid with Dad and my older brother Spencer. Holidays in the sun. Night in. Christmas Day. New Years.
So many memories..."You know my friend, Barbra don't you Hun?" She brings up
"From bingo, right? Why..." I ask suspiciously
"Well, she has a son, Jack. He sounds kinda lovely boy and well..." she drifts off
"What have you done now?!"
"I may have said you'd go out on a date with him... Tomorrow"
"WHAT?!!? Mum I have plans ! You had no right to go behind my back like that."
"Puh-lease! Plans doesn't consist of Tom Hardy films and ice cream. Which means you should get yourself down the gym and to the salon ready for your date. He has your number. Bye Hun, love you." Mum dismisses me.
I huff my way out of the room. Friday mornings should be spent in bed...
