Chapter 5
My Afternoon With Rachel
Trevor was sick the rest of the week, so we couldn’t hang out. On Sunday afternoon I was bored so I decided to go see Rachel. I put on some good clothes and got ready.
I stepped out of my house on my front lawn. The sun was shinning brightly in the sky. It was a really nice day for the middle of fall. I walked down the street toward Rachel’s house. I passed some younger kids who were playing in fallen leaf’s. I walked further until I got to her house.
I went up to the front door and rang it. I waited a few moments before Rachel came out. She was still in her pajamas. Her hair was messy and she looked as if she had just gotten up. I didn’t care though, I still thought she looked beautiful.
“Aaron!” she said. “What are you doing here?”
“Trevor got sick this weekend and I wondered if you wanted to hang out?” I hope that didn’t sound too dumb.
“Sure,” she said. “I have nothing better to do today anyways. Let me just throw on some clothes.” She went back into her house while I waited for her. About ten minutes later she came back out.
“Ready?” she asked me.
“Yeah, do you want to walk to the park or something?” I asked her.
Our neighborhood has a really nice park in it. It’s still pretty new. It has a bunch of slides and swings. It was a great place to hang out.
“Sure, I remember I always went to the park when I was little. My Mom would always push me on the swing. I would always scream for her to go higher until I couldn’t go any higher.”
“I remember that’s where I met Trevor for the first time” I told her. “We were both really young. Four or five maybe. He was playing in the sandbox, while I was playing with a ball. I dropped the ball and it bounced into the sandbox. Trevor picked it up and I told him it was mine. He gave it to me and asked if I wanted to play with him. We played together for the rest of the day. After that we played at the park every day.”
That was a good day. Mostly because it was the day I met my best friend. It’s cool that we’re still friends all the way through high school. Some people have friends, but they’re only friends with them for a certain amount of time. Even when we had different classes back in grade school we would still hang out all the time. Sure, we had other friends, but those people went away after a while. Trevor and I still stayed friends after all this time.
Rachel laughed at the story. “That’s so cool that you guys are still friends. I remember I met some people there, but I have forgotten about them as the years have passed.”
“Yeah, friends come and go” I told her. “I remember that’s where I met Tyler too. He was six or seven back then. Trevor and I were playing in the sandbox with some trucks when he came over. He grabbed one of trucks and started playing with it. We told him it was ours but he just told us that it was his now. He started showing up to the park more often. He usually chased us around the playground or pushed us off the swings.”
“Oh, he’s not that bad” Rachel said. “You just need to warm up to him a little bit.”
“Yeah, warm up to him” I said sarcastically.
We walked further until we reached the park. Many kids were running around and sliding down the slides. It wasn’t much of a surprise since it was a nice day out. We sat on a bench and talked for a while. We then decided to walk somewhere else. We walked down the neighborhood and talked some more.
“Aaron,” Rachel started to say. She stopped walking.
“Yeah?” I said.
“Aaron, I have something to tell you” Rachel said. Now I knew instantly that this could end up good or bad. From the way she was saying it I couldn’t tell.
“Well, we’ve been hanging out together for a while now” Rachel said. She paused and then continued. “And I was just wondering...” She paused again.
“Yes?” I said.
“Well...” Rachel started to say. She was cut off by loud blaring rock music and a loud car.
A big, red, beat up truck came around the corner. It headed towards us. I didn’t have much time to think before a white object came flying towards by face.
“Splat!” large egg hit me right on the side of the head. Yellow ooze dripped down the side of my head. I looked up and saw Tyler and some of his friends laughing in the truck. Tyler’s older friend was driving the truck. There was about four or five people in the truck.
Another egg hit me on the chest. I was pelted with another six eggs by Tyler and his friends. Tyler stuck his head out the window. He was smiling an evil smile.
“Suck on that, Aaron!” Tyler yelled laughing. They all drove away laughing with the sound of blaring rock music fading away.
I was a mess. Eggs dripped down my whole body. Tyler never gives it a rest. I looked over at Rachel. She looked shocked.
“Aaron, are you okay?” she asked with concern.
“Yeah, I’m fine” I groaned. “What were you trying to tell me, Rachel?”
“Oh, nothing” she said. “Well, you better go get cleaned up.”
“Yeah,” I replied. “See you later.”
“Ok, see you later” she said. Rachel ran down the road back to her house. I watched her till she turned the corner. I was having an awesome time with her, but now she’s gone.
“Screw you, Tyler” I muttered out loud. “Screw you.”
