Peter Pan

Prologue

The ever so popular story of Disney's Peter Pan is a bedtime story we've grown up with, hoping that one day Peter will show up at our window sill and take us to Neverland. Every young child's wish is to never grow up and to live with Peter and Tinker Bell and the lost boys. This fairy tale is just that. A fairy tale. A myth that we have been told since we were little. Fairies and boys who fly and never age don't exist. It wasn't till I had started University that I discovered that the story we grew up with was false and the true story was far more dark and twisted.

The true story started when a young Peter, at the age of 5, passed away from Leukemia and became an angel up in the heavens above. His family was devastated by the loss of their little boy who never had the chance to grow up. For years, they have done whatever they could to keep their baby alive for what they hoped to be a lifetime. When he was sent up to the heavens, an angel superior named James took Peter under his wing and raised him to become a guardian angel. The moment James took Peter in, he knew there was something different, something big that this little child would bring to the system. It was a gut feeling of knowing that even before death, Peter was meant to be a guardian.

Fifteen years later, Peter had the opportunity to go down to earth on his first assignment along with the other guardians in training. Peter was awestruck by the humans and how people interacted with one another. Their actions were found as peculiar due to the fact that he never experienced human interaction. The only interaction he had known was that of the guardians in which every day had consisted of waking up, going straight to training that lasted till the sun had fallen then night academy and once that ended, he would return home and sleep. He talked to the other trainees, however, it was more in a formal matter, talking only of the training and upcoming assignments, hoping they would be on the list. He couldn't help but astray from the trainees and go discover the world he never got to know.

He couldn't remember much about his life before he died. All he could remember was his nursery that was like a magical forest and on the door hung a sign that said "Neverland." The soft, soothing voice of a woman who he guessed to be his mother telling him a bedtime story would appear when he would lie down for sleep. The woman would tell the story of a little boy named Peter Pan, that's where he got his name, who discovered a world where growing up was prohibited. Along with Peter, a group of boys (lost boys), and a sassy fairy by the name of Tinker Bell, resided with the boy who never wanted to grow up. Peter remembered the stories his mother told him about Peter Pan and his adventures fighting Captain Hook and the quests he went on with the lost boys.

While Peter was on his little adventure, he saw a little girl sitting against a tall oak tree with her knees tucked to her chest and her head resting on her knees. Little, quiet sobs filled the silent night as they left the purple lips of the girl. Her auburn colored hair shone in the moonlight making it almost impossible to not stare.

A hand was placed on Peter's shoulder causing him to jump. "I knew you'd find her. From the moment I took you in, I knew you were meant to be a guardian. Her name is Avalon Winters. 7 years old. And she is your assignment." Peter recalled the purpose of an assignment but couldn't decipher the internal feelings he began to felt when he saw the girl. Peter looked into the eyes of his superior then back to the girl. He felt a sudden connection to her once he found out he was her guardian angel. "Why is she crying? And why can I feel her?" Peter asked without breaking visual on Avalon.

James took in a deep breath then spoke, "once a guardian angel is assigned to a troubled or struggling human, a connection is formed. All pain and feeling she feels will also be felt by you as of this moment on. When she is in danger you too will feel the same fear or adrenaline she does. When you feel this, you are to do whatever it is to help her. This is the job we guardians must do to keep the young from leaving the earth sooner than they should."

And since that day on a crisp autumn night, Peter knew he had a job to do. However, he took advantage of his given freedoms. Since he saw his assignment, a strong urge to see her had formed and so one night he sneaked out to see Avalon. There was no reason behind the reason as to why he wanted to. He just simply wanted to see her. This is against the guardian rule.

The rules state that guardians can only see their human when they are in danger or in need of guidance. The reason this law was enforced because over a century ago, a guardian fell in love with his human and would sneak out every weekend to see her. Turns out that when he would visit her, they would go to dinner. The woman had fallen in love with him instantly due to the aura angels have that make humans cast under a spell. He would disguise himself as a normal human and after about a month of seeing her, the girl was pregnant with an angel's child. This was frowned upon and the angel had fallen from the heavens and unfortunately, he didn't survive the fall. Since then the top superiors do whatever they can to keep history from repeating itself.
