Semi-AU. Kakashi wasn't born in Konoha. One day, Rin, Obito, and Minato are sent on a mission to a poverty stricken village, where they meet a slave named Kakashi.

Rin smiled as she saw Obito running towards them.

"Sorry I'm late!" He said.

"It's okay." Rin smiled. "Minato said he will explain everything on our way there."

"Where are we going?" Obito asked.

"To a small village east of us."

"Does it have a name?"

Rin laughed lightly. "Of course. It's called Asheville."

"It's a very poor town, and just to earn you, they don't live like us. They have slaves of all ages. You might even see a boy or girl your age." Minato explained.

"What!" Obito exclaimed. "Why?"

"It's how they live. The poor families have no other options. They start out as paid workers, then to pay drops until it is non-existing. And they can't leave by the time that happens." Rin said with deep saddness in her voice.

Obito looked at Minato, hoping the Jounin would correct her. But Minato just nodded. "Correct, Rin."

~~~~~~~~
"We're here!" Obito cheered. He took one look around and his expression immediately dropped. "This place looks aweful!"
"Shh!" Rin said. "Don't offend anyone already."
"Rin is right." Minato said. "We are here to help them with a group of thugs that keep paying them a visit. We will learn the details once we find the Town Leader."
Obito nodded. "Okay! So we should go to the house that's the biggest, right?"
Rin nodded. "Yep. That would make the most sense."
Obito smiled at Rin. "Let's go then!"
"Wait!" Minato grabbed Obito's jacket as a large dog ran across the road in front of them.
At a second glance, it appeared to be a pony. And a small girl was chasing after it, gripping on her dress.
"I'll get it!" Rin said and shot off after the pony.
The girl stopped as she almost collided with Rin. Her eyes widened as she watched Rin run incredibly fast and catch the runaway pony. Then she turned to look at Minato and Obito.
"Hello! Are you the ninja who my father sent for?" The girl asked.
Team Minato was going to be like extra guards for everyone. Minato went to go scout out where the thugs are while Rin and Obito helped out around the village.
Rin was at the bathhouse and doing simple household chores. Obito was given the job to watch over the fields with a man named Devan all day.
Devan honestly looked like a scarey guy. But he treated Obito kindly. They walked around the fields, occasionally stopping to make sure everything was going smoothly. Obito almost got run over by a horse, an ox, and a sheep dog. The dog actually knocked him to the ground, but that's just extra details.
"Hey," Obito said as they stopped again. "What's that guy doing over there?" He asked, pointing to a hunkered down figure with spiked up white hair.
"I don't know." Devan said. "I'll go take a look. You stay here."
Obito nodded and watched as Devan walked through the freshly tilted soil and towards the boy. The boy stood up quickly and spin around. Obito could barely make out the conversation, but he figured out a lot of things.
The boy was about his age. He was very thin, and apparently protecting something. He seemed to be pleading for something. Maybe help, a break, water, food. Anything really.
Obito looked around and quickly for bored. What was taking Devan so long this time? He breathed deeply and walked towards them.
"Hey! Devan! What's taking so lo-" Obito froze as he got close. "Are you okay? Why are your hands bloody?"
"It's none of your concern." Devan said.
"It's my dog!" The boy said. "Master said no pets inside. So I've been taking care of him out here. But he got sick and started coughing up blood." He quickly said and closed his eyes.
Obito stepped forward to see the dog behind the boy but Devan got in the way. "Your master is correct. You can't have a pet. It would take up to much of your time."
"But-"
"No." Devan barked, the boy flinched. "You won't touch this dog again. You will go back to your house and hope I don't tell your master."
The boy looked down, his hair falling in his face. "Y-yes sir."
Obito just stared in confusion as he processed everything that just transpired.
"Let's go Obito." Devan said, putting a hand on Obito's shoulder andpushing them back onto the dirt path they were on before.
Obito looked over his shoulder at the boy to see he was now getting up and jumped over the rows of dirt and back towards town. A few of the others looked at the boy with looks of pity, envy, knowing, and satisfaction.
~~~~~~~

"Why do you want me to come out here?" Rin asked.

"Shh." Obito said. "People still work out here at night. And you'll see it."

Obito looked around the field until he heard a soft growl to his left. He looked and saw it was a small pug with a dark blue bandana as a cape. He knew it was the dog the boy was hiding.

"Here he is." Obito bent down, only for the dog to growl louder. "His owner said he was sick and coughing up blood. Think you can help?"

~~~~~~
"Hey!" Obito ran towards the familiar white hair. When he went to his client's house to sleep, he had seen the boy cleaning. Of course, the boy didn't see him or Rin.
The boy turned around and his eyes were filled with recognition. "You're the boy who was with Devan." He said. "Is it about yesterday? I'll do anything. Just don't tell Master."
Obito shook his head. "Nah! I actually have something to show you." He grinned.
"You're name's Obito, correct?" The boy asked.
Obito nodded. "Yeah! And what's your name?"
The boy shrugged. "I don't know. Most call me Kakashi, though."
Obito nodded. "Okay. That's your name then. Nice to meet you Kakashi!" He grinned and held out the dog.
Kakashi's eyes widened in surprise. "He's not sick!"
Obito faintly questioned how he knew from a glance.
"But... I can't touch him..." Kakashi's face fell.
Obito shook his head. "It's fine. Hey, um, weird question." Obito set the dog down. "Are you a slave?"
Kakashi's face hardened. "Hai... have been sense my father died."
Obito nodded. "Okay, hey. Think we can hang out? Like, I can do jobs with you and stuff?"
Kakashi shrugged. "I don't see why not. You just have to ask Master."
Obito nodded. "Okay, I will. I'll also take care of your dog..."
"Pakkun"
"Pakkun. Because you can't touch him." Obito grinned.
Kakashi nodded, his lips curling up slightly.
