Nature is beautiful. It is the brain that the earth is proud to show the universe. Oceans, lakes, and rivers filled with gorgeous plants and fish. Mountains thousands of feet above the bright green grass. Forest giants competing for highest rank, with the rich reward of open sky and light brighter than no other. Sunrises greeting the open plain with a colorful firework show, and leaving dusk to gather the scraps. But, and excuse me for sounding cliché, it is the smallest and most seemingly unimportant elements that are the true beauty of the earth.

Carter Marx always understood this.

She noticed that old rusty bike at the junkyard on Vine Street had a small bell on the left handle.

She noticed the old librarian, Mrs. Howard, always wore a small brown bracelet.

She noticed the small cracks in the asphalt walking to school.

This is why she only had one friend, because they were the only one who understood her. They were the only one who understood why every little detail was important.

This is also why she sat in the back of the room, so she could watch the butterflies with blue eyes.

Colton Smith, like pretty much everyone else, never understood Carter.

He never understood why her eyes where always so wide.

He never understood why she looked at every single thing.

He never understood why she sat at the back all the rooms, just staring outside the window.

This is why he was so curious about her.
