CHAPTER 61

Walking to my room, I felt a slight touch on my left hand. Will looked at me and smiled before taking my hand in his. I was feeling worse every minute. Max was ahead of us, talking to one of the team members,

"Will, I..." But I ran out of words. Maybe if I broke it off with him, I can be with Max. That's what I wanted right? I didn't know what I wanted. Max turned and his eyes immediately fell to our linked hands, and then up at me before continuing his conversation. We knew how we felt about each other, and maybe it was meant to be. That's when it struck me. This isn't about me, or Will or Max or this crazy love triangle, no, this was about surviving a war. All of this won't matter if we die. I needed to get my head in the game and focus on tactics and not relationships.

"Hey," Max whispered loudly, peeking his head around my door in the morning,

I sat up, "Hi"

"Today I have lived exactly two decades" he smiled,

I was confused, and then I understood, "Happy birthday, old man!" I get up out of bed and tiptoe across the cold floor to him,

"I am officially two years old than you"

"One actually"

"What? You're nineteen?"

"Yeah my birthday was a few days back, to my surprise too"

He leaned against the door frame, "Damn, I missed it. But don't worry I'll make it up to you"

"You better," I smiled as I hugged him, but stepped back when I remembered what I thought of yesterday, I had to get rid of distractions.

"Are you okay?" he asked, and when I didn't reply, "Alex?"

I snapped back, "What?"

"Are you okay?"

"Yeah, I'm fine, just a little light- headed, I'll be fine"

The next person to rap on my door was Demi. I opened it and saw her arrogant expression, "Plan. Now. Come" she said blankly, walking away as I shut the door behind us,

We met in the office parking lot where we left the Jeeps, "Where are the others?" I asked looking around,

"They're coming, Max is talking to Bek about something, Will is out somewhere, and Logan probably went with him"
I nodded, "So, the plan...any ideas?"
"Actually yes. Last night I thought, why don't we just use Bek's idea with using Max-"

"Are you kidding? And risk his life?"

"What is it with you two?"

I looked away, trying not to show her my guilty expression,

She continued, "You know what he told me a couple days back, when we were making out?"

Oh god. I didn't want to hear her bullshit right now,

"...He said 'Demi, if something happens to me, make sure you keep Alex safe'. I mean like in the middle of making out! Who does that? He's probably just with me for your safety. But he's the only thing that makes me feel-"

"-human" I say, slowly. If what she was saying was true, Max had no interest in her, and that made me feel worse. I have to break it up with Will and then crush Demi? I couldn't, it was wrong. I wasn't going to be with Max or Will, I have to be independent and fight this battle, and if we win, and we get to live normally, then we'll think about what happens after. But right now, we have to plan.

"About time you guys showed up!" Demi says, as the sweaty boys walked in, sitting down on the car hoods with us.

"Where were you?" I whisper to Will,

He looked at me but didn't say anything.

They started throwing ideas around, and I sat quietly, listening. I hated to admit it, but we needed help.It was time.

"Follow me"

"The subway? How is that going to help?" Demi scorned,

I looked at Will, who nodded in agreement as he led the way downstairs.

"Well, well, well. What have we got here?" I hear Connor say, walking towards us, "Well isn't this a sight? Alex Steine and Max in the same room, I'm starstruck"

Max, Demi and Logan held their guns up,

"We need to talk," I began walking up to him, but Max stopped me,

"Wait, you know this guy?"
"He's going to help"

"Oh, now you need our help?" he says, crossing his arms. I rolled my eyes as he said, "Admit it, you do"

"Fine, we do... we need a plan. This doesn't mean I trust you. So will you help us?"

"I thought you'd never ask," he smirked.
