Anneliese’s POV

Today is the day. Today is the day I may have to choose a man to marry. My father, the King of Aeldan, set up a dinner with two princes of other Kingdoms for me to marry.

The problem was, I’m only 16. Too young for marriage, in my eyes. There is so many other things for me to do in life and the only thing I was getting to do is meet princes from other Kingdoms, ones I didn't know well enough from dinner or ones that I don’t think I’d be happy with.

“Anneliese! Are you almost ready for the dinner?”

“Yes, mother! I am just fixing my hair!”

I walked down the light brown staircase, into the refined dining room. There were two men, a young-looking redhead, and an older-looking man with black – almost grey hair.

“Ah, hello darling,” said the older man. “I am King Philip of Edellen."

He grabbed my hand and kissed it as he bowed. I curtsied as the young prince glided over to me.

“Hello, madam. I am Prince George of Terrassi.”

He also bowed and kissed my hand. I curtsied once again and walked over to my seat next to my mother.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Dinner went by slowly as King Philip and Prince George talked about their kingdoms and flirted with me. Neither of them really caught my attention and I wasn’t really attracted to them.

“My darling,” said my father.

“Yes, father?”

“Could I please speak to you in your room upstairs?”

“Of course, father.”

"Excuse us."

We both walked up the stairs, into my large bedroom on the right-side of the hall.

“You don’t seem to be enjoying yourself with these men. Is there something wrong tonight?”

“Well, father, you see, I don’t think I’m ready to be getting married at my age.”

“Absurd! You are sixteen! I think that is a reasonable age to be meeting your future spouse!”

“But, father-"

“No! You will pick one of these men tonight and that’s final! Do you understand me?”

“Yes, father. I understand.”

“Good. Now come back downstairs to the dining room.”

“Yes, father.”

He walked down, while I was stopped at the top of the staircase. He looked back me and waved his hand for me to come down. He walked into the dining room while I was still coming down.

“Sorry for the inconvenience. She shall be here in a minute.”

I got to the last step, and stopped. The front door was there, right in front of me. Should I run for it? I wasn’t ready for this, being forced into marriage with a guy I do not love. I tiptoed to the front door, opened it a crack as it creaked.

“Who’s there?” I heard my mother yell.

Shit. I opened it all the way and ran out as I heard footsteps running into the foyer.

“Anneliese! Come back here this instant! ANNELIESE!”

But I was already halfway down the road when my father started running.
