I finally snapped out of my thoughts after a few minutes. I put the key in the ignition and turned the car on. I backed out and started forward.  As I was gaining some speed, a kid ran out in front of me out of no where. I slammed on the breaks as fast as I could. I didn't hit him, thankfully.

The kid just stood there staring at me. I got out of the car and hurried to him. He seemed out of it. His eyes were puffy and bloodshot. I asked him if he was ok, but he didn't answer me. I asked him his name. Again, he didn't answer me  he just looked up to me. Fear, anger, sadness, and pain all visible in his eyes.

I grabbed onto his shoulder and told him to come with me. Surprisingly, he nodded his head in agreement. I guided him to the school and took him into the office. I asked the man at the desk if the kid went to Anchor Beach. He told me he didn't look familiar, but said I could ask Monte.

I took the kid back to Monte's office and knocked on the door. I heard shuffling behind the door. After a few seconds, Monte opened it. She seemed anxious about something. And then she saw the kid under my arm and concern took over.

"What's happening?" She asked confused.

"Uhm, Monte. Does this child go here?"

"Yes... What's happening?"

"What is his name, Monte?" I asked with a hint of frustration. I didn't mean to, but it just happens.

"James Stirling," she said looking to the boy, "I don't quite understand what's going on.."

"Monte, James here just ran out in front of my car. It looked like he did it on purpose, but he refuses say anything to me."

"What?" She asked looking to James, "James... Why would you do that? I don't understand... You're top of your class and you do so well in school... What's wrong, James? You can talk to us..."

"It's... It's my foster family..." He croaked out, choking on tears.

His foster family?...
