I won't claim to be the perfect sister. I have always wanted to be better than Mia, but she just always seemed to be able to click with everyone she met. I, on the other hand, am always awkward around new people. This has caused me to lash out and easily become annoyed with Mia. But none of that means I don't care for her.
When I noticed the way Mia was acting I knew something was up. The whole ride home I was almost afraid to talk to her, but I had to try.
"Hey Mia, I know you're upset about- you know- the break up and everything," I stammered, "But I want you to know you can talk to me if you want...."
"I'm honestly not in the mood right now," Mia snapped, "Stop trying to be some therapist. I don't feel like talking to anybody, and you're just making it worse so knock it off."
You could say that shut me right up. Actually, it shut me up for the rest of the car ride. As I pulled into the drive way of our stereotypical white picket fence house, I braced myself for impact as my mother came rushing out to tackle Mia with hugs. With the attitude Mia was having right now this could end in nothing but disaster.
As Mia stepped out of the car, mom came in for the attack.
"MIA! Oh honey, we missed you so much!" Mom squealed.
"Welcome home, Pumpkin!" Dad said with an embrace.
Once Mom and Dad gave those first hugs, it was like a switch went off in Mia's brain. She suddenly became more alert and snapped out of whatever funk she was in the whole ride home.
One could say this didn't make sense to me, but that would be an understatement. Mia and my parents went straight into chatting it up about the trip.
Mom: "Oh Mia I'm so glad you're home! Was your trip amazing?"
Mia: "Oh Mom you have no idea! It was the most beautiful place I have ever been to! You have to see my pictures!"
Dad: "So, it was worth all the bake sales and fundraising you did?"
Mia: "Oh daddy, it was worth every darn cookie I baked!"
This went on until mom finally noticed the rash Mia had and the hacking every other word Mia spoke.
"Mia, are you sick?" Mom asked in a concerned tone.
"I'm sure it's just a cold, Mom." Mia responded in a strained tone.
"It's getting late anyway, you should get some sleep, Mia." Dad responded.
As the rest of the family walked in the house, I proceeded to take Mia's luggage out of my car.
"YOU'RE WELCOME FOR PICKING HER UP!" I Yelled.
As I lugged the bags into the house, I dropped them in the kitchen and slowly walked upstairs to my bedroom.
"Good Night sweetie!" I heard Mom yell to me as I dragged my feet up the stairs.
"Night." I responded.
I dropped into bed and fell asleep almost instantly.
CRASH
It was so loud that it would have been nearly impossible to sleep through it.
Probably just the cat.
A scream from my parents bedroom.
Definitely not the cat.
