Maya's POV
"Uhh," I groaned as my alarm clock went off on my phone. I opened my eyes and read the words on the screen:

5:30 a.m
If Darryl Dixon can pull an arrow out of himself and kill a walker with it, you sure as hell can get your ass out of bed.

Ah, the walking dead, I thought to myself.

I got out of bed and gathered my stuff for a shower. I was just about to put my music on shuffle for the shower when my phone rang.

I glanced down at my screen:

Riles💁🌈😸

"Hey, Riley. Yes, I'm up, I'm about to take a shower. See you at 7:00, as usual-"

"Actually." Riley interrupted.

I stopped in my tracks.

"Yeah?"

"Is it okay if I walk with Lucas to school today?"

I. Was. Shocked.

She never walks with anyone else. Wasn't she the one who said she looks forward to me walking her to school everyday?

Yeah, thought so.

I'm probably just overreacting. I don't know.

"Maya?"

"Uh- yeah. Yeah, that's fine. Have fun."

"Thanks Maya, you're the best!" She says.

"I know." I say, hanging up and faking a smile, even though she couldn't see me.

I sighed, and sat for a minute, trying to come up with someone...anyone.

Then, it came to me. I picked up my phone and went to my contact:

Farkle🔬

"Hello?" His groggy morning voice answered.

"Hey, Dr. Turtleneck!"

"Uhh," he groaned," we're still on that?"

"Yup. Hey, wanna walk to school?"

"What about-"

"Riley's walking with Lucas."

"Well, I was going to walk with Smackle."

"Right. Your girlfriend. Why wouldn't you walk with her...?" I say, mostly to myself.

"Maya, I can cancel if you want, I can-"

"No, it's fine. I just- I gotta go, see you at school." I said, and quickly hung up.

I walk to the bathroom and start my shower, putting my music on shuffle.

Great, so I have to walk alone to school. I mean, I get it, she wants to walk with her boyfriend and stuff, but I'm her best friend! It's our tradition.

What ever happened to thunder and lightening?

*

I walk into the kitchen, put some bread in the toaster and grab the usual sticky note from the fridge.

Hey, babygirl, had to get to work early. See you after school.

                                                    Love,
                                                        Mom.

I threw the note away, and pulled out my toast. Things will be better. Shawn and my mom had gotten married last weekend, and he's moving in soon, so I won't be alone here anymore. He just had to get most of his stuff from storage in Philedelphia.

He said he doesn't wanna pack light anymore.

Huh.
