Jasper Taylor hesitates just beyond the door of his first class. Again, he compares the painted black numbers on the door to the ones on the crumpled timetable he holds in his hands. He is definitely in the right place, whether he wants to be or not. In all honestly, Jasper just wants to go home, but he knows that is not a possibility. He is stuck; at least until he finishes the school year. He knows that he can make the most of it, at his previous school he was what you would call popular, but sometimes he felt that was only because of his parent’s status. It’s amazing how many people can like you once they find out the sum of your bank account. That’s why Jasper is choosing to, this time; keep that side of himself a secret. He wants people to like him for who he is, not what he has.
Jasper inhales a slow steady breath, attempting to push back his shaking nerves. The classroom is almost full, but there is no teacher present. Feeling awkward and on the spot even though almost no one turned to look, Jasper shoves his hands deep in the pockets of his jeans and begins scanning the room for an empty and isolated seat.
His eyes flicker around in a hurry, not wanting to stand still too long in case someone notices that he doesn’t belong. Someone in the second last row is staring at him, but this seems normal to Jasper because he is a new face, and it is expected that people will wonder who he is. However he is sure not to make eye contact. Behind the boy who is watching him with an intense stare, two girls notice his awkward stance and begin to whisper to each other.
Ty shamelessly eaves drops on Alexis and Ruby’s conversation, not realising how he is staring at the boy.
“Is he new?” Ruby asks.
Ty can hear the smirk in Alexis’ voice when she responds, “I think so; I’ve never seen him before.”
“He’s cute.”
Ty can’t help but soak in the appearance of the new guy, and he realises that Ruby is right. He is cute – just like Brad had warned him that morning. Ty knows he shouldn’t be thinking that way, it could get him in trouble, but it’s so obvious that he can’t help it. New Guy’s hands are in the pockets of his tight, light blue jeans. He wears a simple black button up shirt that seems to complement his skin shade, which isn’t dark, but cannot be described as pale either. His jawline is only subtly accented in his almost round face, the light brown and golden curls on his head fall over his eyes as he looks down slightly, hiding them from view.
“This one’s mine, go sit somewhere else?” Alexis nudges Ruby out of the chair who begrudgingly moves to a table closer to the front of the room.
Ty wants to stop it happening, but it’s too late – Alexis waves the new kid over.
Jasper raises his eyebrows at the change in seating as it is followed by an address he gets from the remaining girl “Hey, new kid, over here.” but after giving her a once over, Jasper makes his way to her. She’s good looking, and seems confident enough; so she’s probably a good friend to make.
Beside Ty, Sarah tries to subtly watch what is happening over her shoulder, though she fails miserably. Ty on the other hand, remains stiff and facing forward, listening to every word that passes between the two while refusing to turn his head and give himself away.
“I’m Alexis, but my friends call me Alex.” Her words are not flirtatious, but her tone is beyond being so.
“I’m Jasper.”
Ty smiles to himself. Jasper, that suits him. It takes a moment for Ty to realise what he has thought and that he is smiling before he scolds himself.
Stop it, Ty! You can’t think about him like that... Oh, but what’s the harm really – I don’t know him, it doesn’t mean anything… There’s a lot of harm, you know how he gets… How will he know? He’s not here, and it’s not like I’m going to say anything about it… Don’t kid yourself, you know the second you take off those sunglasses he can read you like and open book. You let all your emotions show in your eyes… I know… So, stop it.
