Coral rolled over and over on the floor, eventually bumping into Shark, her brother, who was playing with Turtle, their other sister. "Hey, can't you see we're playing here?" Shark said. "Sorry!" Coral apologized, going over to Sandy and Marine, her other siblings. "Whatcha doing?" She asked. "None of your business!" Sandy squealed, scrambling to hide something behind her back. "Sorry I asked." Coral muttered, limping over to sit in a corner. She was the runt of her litter, born with only three legs. They've been at the shelter for as long as Coral could remember. Two of her brothers, Flotsam and Jetsam, have been adopted, and they were the only ones that would play with her, although they always treated her like she was inferior. Every time a human comes in to select a pet, Coral tries to act as friendly as possible. No one ever even seems to consider her, though. But Coral has never given up hope.
Months later
Coral was the only one in her litter not adopted yet. She lived in a tiny cage, with almost no space to walk around. It isn't fair. She thought. Im not that different. Why am I not appreciated? But, one day, the puzzle of Coral's mind started to come together. "Hello." A tall young woman said to the shelter owner as she walked in. A few minutes later, she came to see the dogs. Coral sprung up, this woman smells good. I like her! Coral decided. The woman crouched down to look at Coral, then read the plaque next to Coral's cage. "How about her?" The woman asked. "Really? You want Coral?" The shelter owner asked with a twinge of disgust, but he took Coral out anyway. Coral's heart started beating frantically and her brain went all over the place. The only thing that seemed logical was to wag her tail and lick the woman. She laughed, and kneeled down to pet her. Coral was elated. She might choose me! The woman gave Coral a final rub on the head and she was put back in her cage. The rest of the time the woman was looking at dogs, Coral silently prayed she would be chosen. The woman went into the office, and came out later holding a lot of papers. To Coral's absolute delight, she was led out of her cage to the woman. "I'm Melody." Melody whispered to Coral. She took Coral's leash and led her out of the shelter. "You're staying with me." Melody said, petting Coral's head. Coral wagged her tail and went into Melody's car. Ever since then, Coral stayed with Melody, and they became very best friends.THE END
