“I’m sorry, I have to leave,” were the only words written on the letter that was left on our door step one cold December evening. Even though it doesn’t have any name addressed to it I know that the letter was for me and it was written by Alex.

I felt like the whole world was crushing into pieces. Felt like my shattered heart was being buried at the very deepest part of the earth and no one, not even me could ever find it.

I don’t know what happened, just a few weeks ago everything was going so well, Alex even surprised me the day before my birthday. Then suddenly he would just send me this letter?

Did I did something wrong? I asked myself so many times but I can’t find any answers. I tried to call Alex’s cell phone but he’s not answering.

Finally I reached my limit.

I ran down the stairs from my room, out to the cold dark night, grabbed my bike and rode it to Alex’s house as fast as I could.

When I reached Alex’s home their family’s maid opened the door with a smile.

“Where’s Alex?” I asked still panting.

The maid’s face suddenly turned gloomy, sad, her smile turned into I’m-going-to-cry face.

“Why? What?” I asked, my heart was beating so fast and I know that it’s not because I pedaled all my way through to Alex’s, but because I felt that I’m about to know something bad.

“You must be Ms. Phoebe,” the maid said, looking at me with pity in her eyes. “Young master originally doesn’t want you to know his condition, but—” the maid broke, and she started to cry.

I don’t know what to do, all I know was that I’m also crying, I held the maid’s shoulders, “Tell me please!” I said, I just wanted to know the whole truth.

I was pedaling with all my strength, I felt weak after knowing what Alex was trying to hide from me from the very beginning but I have to reach the hospital as fast as I could. The freezing wind touched my skin like knives cutting through my whole being.

Everything was clear already.

Alex and his family left and went to a foreign country back when we were seven because his parents thought that his illness could be cured there. But they were wrong. When Alex turned eighteen he begged his parents to go back and just let him live his remaining life happily.

They agreed.

And so we met at the river bank, just like Alex planned. All along he was trying to find me, the little girl that he left at that old farm, crying.

That time, before my birthday when he surprised me with the string lights and everything, he was actually not allowed to go out of the hospital because he was already confined. But he sneaked out and did everything all by himself just to make me happy.

How could he be so stupid?!

He’s the most stupid person I’ve ever met in my whole life.

---

I was standing in front of the hospital door.

“He’s been in love with you for over ten years, he agreed to leave at that farm back then with the hope that when he comes back he’s already healed, but we were all wrong,” Alex’s mother told me crying.

I was afraid to open the door and see him, Alex lying on a hospital bed, sick. But I need to be strong. At least for him.

I slowly opened the door.
