Author's Note: Characters belong to Stephenie Meyer. This is just a little story I came up with so enjoy. :)
The story begins a hundred years before my own birth. One hundred and sixteen years precisely to the day I caught the eye of Prince Edward over the crowded ballroom. The invasion was quick. One morning, the human people of the world rose from their beds faced with an onslaught of vampires. Millions were slaughtered but the strongest conquered in the end. Our governments were murdered before our eyes. Schools were abolished and the human race were enslaved to the growing population of vampires.
The Volturi, an ancient family of vampires from Italy, became supreme monarchs of the world and placed heavy laws over the heads of the humans. Humans could not kill a vampire nor could they refuse to allow them to feed from them. Humans had to work for their vampire masters whether this was as private staff or labourers and competition grew between vampire-controlled states on which vampire could produce the most goods in the quickest time and at the expense of their poor human slaves.
The U.S.A. became the U.S.V.A. with the states being separated and controlled individually by a separate vampire monarch. Many of these vampires were from the past and so re-introduced their past cultures as the main culture of their state. In barely one hundred years, time had reversed on the humans with many living the life of a medieval peasant.
I was lucky enough on the other hand to be born in the former state of Washington. This state was owned and ruled by his majesty, Carlisle Cullen, who whilst re-introducing the renaissance culture of his birth to our state, unlike many other vampire monarchs, he introduced fairer laws and education to the human young. He personally set up a free healthcare system for the humans and a voluntary blood donation policy in a bid to stop mass feeding. His kindness was viewed as a weakness to the other monarchs but yet looked upon positively by the people of former Washington, human and vampire alike.
My second piece of luck came from the highness of my birth. My father, Lord Charles Swan, was born a human peasant and yet had risen to a high standing through hard work. King Carlisle knighted him and awarded him the proud job of overseeing human discipline in the state. For all we knew, Washington was the only state that had a human in charge of this job and the prestige of it allowed my father and I to be regulars at the royal court.
I was born in 100 V.A.D. to Charles and his late wife, Renee. I was christened Isabella and was educated alongside other well-to-do human children. However, I never knew my mother. When I was an infant, she was cruelly snatched away from me, disciplined horrifically by the previous head of human discipline. My mother's only sin was to fall for another human man but her punishment was severe. Death by a thousand bites, screamed the vampire head, yet King Carlisle managed to change this to exile before removing the head of human discipline. My mother moved away to the state of Arizona and was never heard of again.
Apart from that, my childhood was a happy one. I lived in a castle just outside the small town of Forks and spent my days, happily playing in the woods with my close friend, a little Native American boy called Jacob Black. We were almost like siblings, both connected over losing our mother at such a young age. But when I reached thirteen and he became twelve, he and his family vanished. Overnight, it seemed as if his reservation had disappeared and I was left, lonely and depressed.
By my fourteenth birthday, it became apparent to my father the importance of a good marriage. A collection of gowns were produced and before I knew it, I was off on horseback to the royal city of Seattle. In the palace of the Cullen family, I became the youngest maid in waiting, alongside other human and vampire girls, to the Queen Esme. Though she was a vampire and naturally my enemy, I became close to her, viewing her almost as a mother figure. She was kind, often helping me with lessons and teaching me pasttimes such as playing the lute or embroidering.
The royal children, all five of them, rarely lived at the same palace as their parents. Prince Emmett and Prince Jasper, both great military men, were stationed at the borders in case of attack and helped train the human and vampire army for defense. Princess Rosalie and Princess Alice lived in the palace at Olympia whilst they continued their studies. The youngest, the mysterious Prince Edward, lived in the state of Alaska whilst he studied alongside the Denali royal family.
On my sixteenth birthday, the anniversary of the conquest, a ball was held at Seattle. And this is where the story of Prince Edward and me takes hold.
