Liam sighed. Zayn was so good at reading him, almost too good. The concern was there in Zayn’s eyes now, and Liam knew it wasn’t going to go away until he told his boyfriend the truth.

“No, Zayn. Honestly, I’ve just been waiting for you to come back. I tried sleeping, but it won’t work when you’re not here.”

“Li…” Zayn’s voice was soft as he brought a hand to Liam’s chest.

“It’s fine. I’m fine. Or, I’m not really fine, but it’s not important. I just-, I wish you didn’t have to leave every night.”

***

Liam was alone in his hotel room tonight. Just like last night, and the night before. He was sitting on his bed, trying to entertain himself with twitter, but failing miserably. The silence in the room was suffocating him, and the bed felt too big for just him alone.

He wanted Zayn to come home. He wanted Zayn to burst through the door and wrap his arms around him and kiss him senseless. He wanted the warmth of Zayn’s body against his own, like he used to have every night before all this crap started. Instead, Zayn went out, night after night, drinking and dancing.

Liam was always asked to come with. Zayn would beg him, plead him, try to persuade him, but Liam couldn’t. He wasn’t strong enough to go to some bar and watch his boyfriend dance with every female in the room instead of him, just to please the photographers. Liam knew Zayn didn’t have a choice, he really did, but that didn’t keep his stomach from turning every time Zayn held someone else the way Liam wanted Zayn to hold him.

With a frustrated groan Liam smacked his laptop shut and threw it away before crawling under the covers. The bed was still too cold, too big and empty, but Liam didn’t want to be awake anymore. Zayn would be plastered when he came back, and that wouldn’t be for hours yet.

He tried to fall asleep, he really did, but he couldn’t. Liam tossed and turned, counted sheep and even put on his favorite calming playlist. Nothing worked. Just as he was about to give up and turn the lights on again, there was a creak.

A small stream of light fell on the bed as the door to the hotel room opened softly.

“Liam?” Zayn whispered into the dark room. Liam scrambled into a sitting position as Zayn entered the room and closed the door behind him. “Are you still awake, babe?”

“Yeah. Hi.” Liam’s voice was scratchy even if he hadn’t slept.

Zayn flicked on the smallest light so that they could see each other, and then went to shrug out of his leather jacket. As Liam watched him get out of his jeans too, he noticed the tan boy was surprisingly present in the way he looked back at him.

“You haven’t been drinking,” Liam stated, although it should have been a question.

Zayn smiled softly as he climbed onto the bed, left in his t-shirt and boxers. He kissed Liam softly before settling into his side.

“No. I wanted to be back early. It’s no fun without you.”

The words stung in a way they shouldn’t have, Liam thought. He buried his head in the other boy’s black quiff, but pulled back quickly. Zayn didn’t smell like himself, cologne and cigarettes and Zayn, he smelled different. It took Liam about two seconds to recognize the smell as women’s perfume.

“What have you been doing?” Zayn asked innocently.

This was the part where Liam usually lied. He would tell Zayn that he’d played videogames, Skyped with Andy, had a quiet pint with Niall or some other stupid excuse. All because he didn’t want to make Zayn feel even guiltier than he already was.

But for some reson Liam just couldn’t do that right now. He didn’t want to lie to Zayn anymore, because if he did Zayn may start leaving him even more.

“Nothing.”

“Nothing?” Zayn sat up on the bed so that they were facing. “I thought you said you’d check out the gym upstairs?”

“You know I don’t want to,” Zayn insisted at once. “You know that! I’d much rather stay with you. I miss you every time I’m out, Liam.”

Liam closed his eyes, no longer wanting to meet the pair of deep brown looking at him.

“Do you know how long it’s been since the two of us went to bed together?” He asked. “I’m not talking about sex. But do you know how long it’s been since I got to fall asleep next to you?”

If Liam had opened his eyes, he’s sure he would have seen despair in Zayn’s. But he kept them closed as Zayn sighted.

“Babe…”

“Three weeks.”

“Liam, don’t—“

“It’s been over a month since we’ve gotten drunk and read comic books together. We used to do that all the time! I was going to ask you to cut my hair again today, since you said you wanted to do that, but-“

Somewhere along the way Liam’s eyes had flown open, and now Zayn had reached out and put a finger on Liam’s lips.

“I know!” His voice was weak and desperate. “I know, Liam! But please don’t say that! Please don’t talk like we’re over, because it’s scaring the living crap out of me!”

Liam could have sworn Zayn’s eyes were shining with tears..

“Over?” Liam asked, and his voice broke. “You think we’re over?”

Zayn let go of him and leaned back so that they their bodies were no longer touching.

“I don’t want to think anything, Li. But we’re not us anymore, and I hate seeing you like this! I don’t want to be the reason that you’re by yourself every night!”

Zayn had to take a break from his monologue, and his hand went to rub at his eyes for only a split second.

“Everything is better than seeing you like this. Tell me what you want, Liam, please? I’ll do anything for you, you know that.”

Liam smiled a small smile that didn’t reach his eyes at all. He was crying now, tears running down his face.

“All I really want is for you to hold me tight and tell me everything is going to be okay. That’s all I want. I want us to be what we used to be.”

Zayn moved in a flash, and before Liam knew it he was wrapped in his boyfriends arms, sobbing into his chest.

“I miss you.”

Zayn tightened his grip on Liam, rocking them back and forth.

“I miss you too. So much, Liam.”

“Stay with me?”

Zayn pulled back again, but this time he cradled Zayn’s face in his hands, running his thumb over the younger boy’s slight stubble.

“I’ll always stay with you. Fuck the photographers, fuck the press, fuck them all. This; us, is more important.”

Liam could see the sincerity behind his words, glowing in Zayn’s eyes.

“I love you,” Liam whispered.

“I love you too. Promise.”
