Chapter 1
I haven't talked to my family in about two months. All of them tried talking to me and get me to move back home, but the thing was, the all kept a huge secret from me. Every single one of them, and they told me it wasn't a big deal.
In my opinion, my boyfriend cheating on me with my sister was a big deal.
I blocked all of their numbers and didn't even show up to my mom's birthday, which was two weeks after I moved out.
Oops.
It was the first day of my job teaching at the high school. I was teaching chemistry for the juniors and seniors at the school.
Before I got to the school, I got some coffee first because I was still tired, even if I went to bed early. When I got to the school, I grabbed all my stuff and walked inside, heading straight to my classroom. I was at the school every day last week to start preparing, but now, it was the first day I would have to teach.
After setting my stuff on my desk, I headed down to the teacher's lounge because apparently, they were going to bring donuts there the first morning of every week and I wanted some donuts.
Quite a few teachers were already there. I met a few during the past week of me coming here, but some I didn't meet.
Martha Goth was the principal of the school and she was there as well. When she spotted me, she walked over. "There are actually a few things I have to tell you about working here," she said. "The students at this school love gossip because they're teenagers, of course, but there's one rumor I'll need you to deny if the students ask you about it. Even though it happened last year, they still talk about it and since you're the new teacher, they'll probably ask you about it to get confirmation."
"What is it?" I asked.
"Last year, one of the students tried committing suicide by jumping off the roof," she said. "He didn't, thankfully. His girlfriend was able to talk him out of it and even though I had to tell the students it didn't happen, they like talking about it. If they ask you, you'll have to deny it."
"Of course," I said. "Does that student still go here?"
"No, he graduated, but since it was a dramatic even, they'll still talk about it," Martha said.
I nodded. "How is he doing, by the way? Something must have been going on for him to try doing that."
"Uh, I don't how he's doing," Martha said. "But someone should." She turned to the table where the donuts were and called someone over before sighing. "Tony, is that your third donut?"
The man, Tony, looked down. "No. It's my fourth."
Martha sighed and gestured for him to come over. "This is the new teacher, Charlie Rutter," she said. "She'll be teaching chemistry to the junior and seniors."
"Hi," he said, giving me a smile.
"Hi," I said back, tempted to return the smile. I only did because he had chocolate sauce all around his mouth. "You kind of have something....here." I gestured around the mouth area.
"Oh, oops," he said, using the napkin in his hand to wipe away the chocolate sauce.
"I was just telling Charlie about the event that the students keep talking about and how she'll have to deny it," Martha said. "How is Grayson doing, by the way? Is he and Poppy still together?"
