"It only takes one shattering event of sufficient magnitude to change one's core beliefs about life"
-Unknown
The smell of the fresh air was apparent and nearly overwhelming as a single one of her bare feet stepped off the rough concrete of her patiao and into the moist dewey grass. The humidity stuck to her skin though not unpleasantly. It was so early in the morning that there was not an ounce of light in the sky nor any light from the home behind her. She knew that she shouldn't have snuck out of her room so late...or early given that it was four o'clock when she'd woken up from her deep slumber. However, she knew she had to. Now was the time, and she was sure of it. Clutching to the shoulder straps of the small drawstring backpack she carried on her back, she pressed on towards the back of her yard that led off into a large forest.
The forest led up to the most amazing hill view of the city , not even thirty minutes from where she lived. She had only lived in this home with her family for a couple months. Her mother was convinced that it was exactly what her family needed after what they'd been through. But she wasn't going to get into those thoughts right now. Putting her mother out of her mind, she continued walking, doing her best to not turn around and run back into the safety of her bedroom. After about five minutes of walking, She realized her decision had become all the more real. "Keep walking, i have to keep walking." She told herself once realization struck. The forest around her was so breath taking, even when she could only faintly see due to a limited amount of illumination from the moon. She found absolute beauty in nature, and she'd always been drawn to it. As cliche as it sounded, shed actually been born in a log cabin in the woods. Per, once again, her mothers choice.
As she continued walking, she could faintly see the glow of the city lights that never seemed to go out. Now at the top of the hill, she could see the edge that marked the end of the forest. Slowing her pace, She stopped about a 20 feet from the cliff and sat down with her legs crossed. She shoved her hands into the hair at the top of her head and closed her eyes in deep thought about what she was really doing. She inhaled deeply, making sure to take it all in. Every single detail. For it would be the last time. She'd done a lot of thinking in the ten minutes it had taken her to walk to the top, and she was making the right choice. She had to be. She just couldn't take it anymore. So, shaking her head, she stood again and closed the 20 ft gap to less than a foot.
The ends of her toes hung off the ledge, And it was that moment that she realized how truly scared she was. Not because she was a sneeze or a strong gust of wind away from falling to her death. No. She was scared because she had no idea how she had ended up in this place. Not physically but mentally. This weak state of mind she was in. Maybe it was her absolutely terrible home life. Or maybe it was her even worse school life. She couldn't pin point the exact source of her current problem. She just knew that it was there. That never ending torment that she faced. She was so far gone, that it didn't even matter. Anything was better than what she was facing.
"I guess this is it." She whispered to herself so quietly, She doubted if she'd even said anything at all.
Taking a deep breath and spreading her arms as if they were wings, she prepared herself.
"Wynn? What are you doing?"
