Chapter 1: Children of Cain
{Shannon POV}
I sighed as I lifted Abigail out of her highchair. I’d missed so much whilst I’d been in that damned coma. But I was here, and I was here to stay. I’d been beaten, shot, and had gone through the process of giving birth to my daughter without an epidural. I smiled as Marilyn rounded the corner and came over to me and Abigail.
“Hey,” he smiled and kissed my hair and then bent slightly to rub noses with Abigail. “Hello! Did you miss daddy? Of course you did!” he said in that voice all adults default to when talking to small children.
I laughed. “Here, you take her for a bit.” I smiled as Abigail was passed between us. I leant up and kissed the tip of Marilyn’s nose before tickling Abigail, making her giggle. “Are you ticklish? Yes you are!” I laughed as her tiny hands grabbed mine. “I’ve gotta go out for a bit, will you make sure she’s okay?”
“Sure, but why?” he asked as I grabbed my keys and handbag.
“So she’s not alone!” I smirked as I turned to kiss him goodbye.
He stopped me though. “No, why do you have to go out?”
I shook my head, smiling slightly. “Have you looked in the fridge or the pantry lately? I need to go get groceries.” I leant up on tip-toe and kissed him sweetly. As I walked to the front door I called back to him. “Try not to burn the house down…”
“I’ll do my best.” He called back and I laughed, closing the front door behind me.
I sighed softly as I drove off. It was true that we’d desperately needed groceries…but I’d gone from knowing I’d been shot to waking up with a daughter…I needed a little alone time… a little me time…

{Marilyn POV}
I heard Shannon laugh as she closed the front door and smiled. I loved her laugh. I looked down at Abigail as I felt her little hands in my hair. “Alright then, bub…it’s just you and me for a bit whilst mummy goes shopping.”
Abigail pointed at the front door. “Mummy…” my jaw dropped. She’d said her first word! Oh, and Shannon missed it…
“Yes, Mummy will be back soon.” I smiled as I walked into the living room and placed Abigail in her little play pen. I frowned as I felt my phone vibrate but smiled as I saw the caller ID. “Hey Twiggy, what’s up?”
“Hey, we were just wondering if we could come over…” Twiggy said overly happily. I smirked, he wanted to see Abigail again.
“We?” I asked sarcastically.
“”Me and Pogo…” I heard him hesitate slightly. “We miss you three…wow…you three…is it just me or is it still odd saying that? Three…”
I shook my head at his rambling. “Yeah, you guys can come round. Shan will be back in a bit and we can all hang out.”
“Great!” Twiggy all but shouted down the phone. “See you in ten!” and then he was gone.
I put my phone back in my pocket and let go of a breath I hadn’t known I’d been holding and looked down at my baby girl. “Well…looks like your uncle Twiggy can’t stay away from you,” I smirked and bent to tickle her, smiling at her adorable little laugh. “You little cutie.”

{20 minutes later…}
I laughed as Abigail played with Twiggy’s hair whilst trying to instruct Pogo where to put her coloured blocks…he was failing miserably. Abigail let go of Twiggy’s hair and clambered down off his lap, holding onto the coffee table for support as she tried to get to Pogo and her blocks. I stood as she got to the end of the table, ready to catch her if she fell…but my jaw dropped as she let go of the end of the coffee table and began taking small, shaky steps, towards Pogo… by herself!
As she got to him, she held her hands out shyly for the blocks and, with a smile, Pogo handed them to her. She turned and grinned at me as she held up her blocks… and then stumbled back a step and landed on her bottom with a tiny, cute ‘ooff’.
I bounded over to her and scooped her up into my arms. “You walked! You walked sweetie!” I smiled and bumped noses with her as I walked over to Twiggy again. “She said mummy earlier too!”
“Aww…” Twiggy grinned and held his hands out for her. “She’s growing up!”
“Mummy.” Abigail smiled and pointed at the window.
“Yeah, she went out, she’ll be back soon.” Twiggy smirked as he leant back. “Then daddy might want some alone time with mummy…”
I glared at Twiggy…but it was true…I did want some time alone with her. My gaze shifted to Abigail as she went quiet; I broke out into uncontrollable laughter as I realised what was happening.
“What?” Pogo asked, wanting in on the joke.
I pointed at Twiggy and Abigail. “See the face she’s pulling?” I laughed. “That means she’s taking a dump…” I nearly fell over I was laughing so hard. “Right in Twiggy’s lap!”
“Oh, Abbie!” Twiggy whined as he pinched the bridge of his nose.
Pogo sobered first. “You realise this means you have to change her diaper, right?”
I stopped laughing at once just as Twiggy nearly pissed himself laughing. “You have to…oh…it’s so funny it hurts! Manson changing a…” the rest of what he was going to say was taken over by his laughter.
I made a face as I picked up my little girl. "Really? You couldn't wait til your mother got back? Okay ...let's do this." She just smiled up at me. “Alright, this is happening then…” I cringed slightly as I searched for Abigail’s diaper bag. I pulled out a clean nappy and wipes as I lay Abigail down. I crinkled my nose as I lifted her little skirt and undid the tabs of the nappy. “Oh…God…” I pulled back as the smell reached my nose. “When you go you really go, don’t you kid?!” I removed the old nappy, wiped her clean, and fastened the clean nappy. As she crawled off back to the living room to Twiggy and Pogo I made a face at the old diaper. “To the bin with you!”
As the bin lid shut, I heard Shannon’s car pull up outside. I folded my arms and rolled my eyes. Her timing really was fantastic sometimes.
