Prologue Part 1 GARDENIA
'What is up with these corsets,' I thought, ' It is the twentieth century and these things are still around.' My family had been invited to an extravagant event with all the other high-ranking families. The thought of people in an ample space, crowded and unaware of their situations, sickens me.
"Jasmin, dear, stop fidgeting. It's quite obvious and unsightly." I caught sight of my gawky body in the oversized mirror. I nodded towards my Auntie.
Always interrupting my thoughts. Oh dear Auntie. 'How obvious and unsightly.' If only I could tell you the many unsightly things I catch sight of in your room but I must bite my tongue. I glanced once again in the mirror.
"Auntie, I'm quite surprised you know of my favorite colors. The effervescent color of white with gold and turquoise accents. It's perfect." I smiled whole-heartedly.
"This event is important, Jasmin. You've got to look your best for your suitors." I turned away from my Auntie and rolled my eyes. The suitors. I've got a lot to say of these suitors. These suitors are not men-of-age trying to get women to raise or keep high statuses. They are more like hormonal boys trying to get some. I giggled.
"Auntie, I know." I said with fraudulent feeling. I walked over to her and sat beside her, clutching her hand. "The love of my love must be in that room. My eyes will catch sight of his and his with mine and we will fall in love. Isn't this exciting?" No way in hell does this actually happen. I was feeding my Auntie of lies she loves to hear. She loves to hear of love that has never happened to her.
"Yes, Jasmin. Just as your mother found your father. Just as I..." My thoughts become hazy. Why is it that everytime someone mentions my mother, I become lethargic and senseless. Since my mother's death, my loving father basically abandoned me. Because of her death, I was left with my Auntie and her malicious family. Mother, how can I find love when there is no love to be found?
"... The many memories you will make tonight. Jasmin, I think it's time to leave. Change, gather your things and we shall go. I'll be at the register." My Auntie quickly got up. I sighed. It gets harder everyday to fake a smile.
I walked over to the cashier where Auntie laid out her dress. I caught sight of the beautiful gardenia's on the cashier's dress. The thought of gardenia's always used to calm me. My mother loved gardenias.
"Did you know gardenias are also called cape jasmin?" I couldn't resist telling the cashier.
"I actually knew that." The cashier gave a smile.
"I have always adored gardenias." I remarked.
"Enough with the small talk." Auntie snapped. We headed for the car.
"Gardenias? Really Jasmin? Odviously no manners what so ever." She whispered under her breathe. She looked back at me, "Let's hope you don't act like that at the event. No man would want to marry a GIRL."
I gritted my teath. 'You shouldn't be talking,' I thought, 'Uncle married you.'
