I am taken back. Not in a million years would anyone else have the dauntlessness to find out if the beast was real or not. That's how I know she's not lying.
How? That is the only question I have. How. How can this happen? How did they come up with this absurdly extravagant plan?
Now I begin to wonder why. And who. Why would they set up this whole imprudent illusion. Who are they? Who would perform such an appalling chicanery. What would this do for us?
"Why do you think they would trick all of us into fearing something not real?" Sophie asks.
"I'm not sure. Do you think the mayor knows?"
"Probably. He is the one who does the interviews. Speaking of which, I have mine in a couple of days. Could you help me with that?"
I'm glad Sophie is opening up about her thoughts and feelings. "Sure," I reply. "We need to speak to the mayor about this abomination of a beast soon though."
"Of course."
We spend the next 20 minutes planning how we were going to approach Mayor Blur and talk to him about the subject. We decide we'll find him tomorrow and speak with him. For once, the mayor will get his turn in an interview.
"Oh, Sophie. There's one more thing I need to show you before we eat. Yesterday, I tried to find you after you ran out of the hall. I was alone outside, and something flew overhead. What seemed like a package dropped out of it." I grab the package from under my bed and pull out the rectangular device.
I look up at Sophie. She is in complete and utter awe. "I have one like that, too."
