As I sat in the quiet car I heard nothing except the sounds of Melissa backing out of the drive way.
I thought back to this morning when she was calling me "silly" and I was calling her "dummy" and honestly it was kinda childish but it also was something that we have always done.
I was suddenly startled by the loud sound of music from the car radio and the bass pulsing through the car and through me.
I looked to Melissa with a grin and we both burst into song.
We continued singing in our worst possible singing voices and flipping our long hair around until we pulled up into the tattoo parlor.
Melissa stopped the music and turned to me.
"So, we agree on the skulls?" She asked, while fixing her hair.
"Absolutely. I kinda love the idea," I admitted, doing the same.
"Great," she exclaimed.
We climbed out of Melissa's car and shared a brief yet meaningful glance and linked fingers before heading towards the tattoo parlor.
She opened the door in front of me and I heard a sweet chime as the door hit the bell above it, notifying the workers of our arrival.
The parlor was vacuous. We seemed to be the only customers.
In the tattoo parlor the floors were black tile with pictures of what seemed to be popular tattoos hanging up on the wall.
A tattooed woman walked up to us. "Can I help you?" She asked in her honey-like voice.
"Yes please. I'm Melissa, and I was wondering if me and my friend could get some tattoos done today?"
"Of course," the lady said."I'm Charlotte, a worker here at 'Ink', we can get ya some mighty fine tattoos, but I'll need to see some ID," she said in her slightly southern accent.
"Sure" Melissa said, reaching into her purse to grab her ID, I did the same.
We both held our ID's facing towards her.
"Okay then," she said, walking over to a desk. "Is there anything specific you want, or do you wanna browse the wall and pick out something you like there?"
"Actually," Melissa said, reaching back into her purse, "could we both get skulls that look like this on our wrist?"
She had pulled out a picture of our old friendship necklaces, with their very intricate designs, "We understand if its too hard, all of those fine lines, its just they have sentimental meaning to us."
"Well," Charlotte started to speak again, "lucky for you, we have a pair of people who can do that" she said, giving a smile to Melissa.
"Really?" she said with doubt, but also a hint of excitement in her voice.
"Of course!" The lady said. "Derek and I can do em' for ya! I'll go get your chairs set up while you two wait in here, sound good?"
"Yep," we said said simultaneously.
"I'm guessing y'all wanna be in the same room?"
"Please," said Melissa.
"Sure thing, I'll come get ya when we're ready for ya," Charlotte said one more time before disappearing behind a door in the short hallway.
I had a bad feeling about her, I don't know what it was, it was just a gut feeling, I guess.
"Are you ready for this?" Melissa said, slightly bouncing up and down in the plastic chair she had sat in.
"As ready as I'll ever be..." I sighed with a feeling that I had just signed off my doom.
