Chapter Ten – Blood in the Dark
It was finally morning. Finn had been up for an hour or so and was just sat staring at the rippling globe of water Alliah had enchanted to give off light so predators would keep their distance. They’d made camp in the clearing from yesterday; Alliah flew the two of them back there in a matter of minutes. Once they settled down they explained everything they knew about the last few days to each other and much more. Finn had particularly been feeling like the world had gone mad and Alliah just didn’t have the whole picture. Now Finn was just trying to absorb everything he’d learned.
He wasn’t concerned about the Queen’s safety because, despite what popular opinion might be, the Queen was pretty deadly if she got the chance to be. That and his knowledge about her new guard designs put him at reasonable ease. His real concerns lay with Alliah, her people and what their existence would mean in the events to follow. Alliah had assured him that the only reason she would ever even consider using such a destructive technique was if she were confident it would only destroy or affect what she intended it to and that it would be necessary. He didn’t necessarily mistrust her but he could see that in the situation she knew she got out of hand. When she destroyed those ten elementals she did it because they were miles above the ground out in the middle of nowhere and because in the air Finn was completely useless and she wasn’t confident she could keep them from hurting him. On the ground it was a different story though she assured, but she had explained things to him that made him not so sure. He was sure he could handle these being on solid ground but Finn was almost certain that Alliah lost her grip momentarily and she hurt some people she didn’t intend to.
Those black humanoid looking things were apparently Void elementals that manipulate pressure systems in their vicinity but doing so took time. She’d warned him about how they could predetermine a path of pressure that could create a vacuum for them to travel along and if he wasn’t careful and didn’t keep moving they could suffocate him or make him explode from their will alone. They sounded like really pleasant people. As for the Starlight elementals, they were more dangerous. They could blind him with light or with dark, luckily though Finn was accustomed to not relying on sight so he wouldn’t be completely helpless. What he really needed to watch out for was getting burned alive because apparently they could bend light in such a way that would create a kind of magnifying effect, which reminded the human of little kids cooking ants with magnifying glasses.
When it came to Storm elementals though, Alliah assured him her family (who were the only storm elementals) wouldn’t be a problem because they’d never side against their daughter. Despite her assurance though Finn still had her explain what they were and could do. After what he’d seen from her she didn’t resist. Storm elementals, as far as what the human took from it, were practically gods. They controlled most forms of energy, water, and pressure. What made them so deadly though was the shear scope and magnitude of their power, Alliah demonstrated that if she wanted she could paralyze his arm because there were tiny pulses of energy coursing through all his body that controlled every aspect of his body. She told him she could feel sound waves and sense forms of light that could allow her to see through behind him. Her powers seemed almost limitless, but there was an actual limit, not that it seemed like much of one. She explained to him that all her family, her and her parents, could temporarily change matter (which was apparently some kind of frozen energy) into a fluid energy form but it took energy to sustain that and how long it retained that form depended on how much matter was transformed. What interested him was that she explicitly explained that the matter always had to return to its physical form and she never one mentioned an ability to absorb the other objects energy.
