Not Young Anymore

William

As I drove to park to the beach, I was surprised to learn that neither Ivy nor Asher drove. Ivy said she has a license but she doesn't see a use of driving here since everything is in a good distance.

Asher said he had a learners permit in highschool but refused to drive after he crashed his uncle's car at a gasstation trash bin. Thank god it wasn't the pump!

"Please don't crash," Asher held on the handle tight. The crash must have been too traumatic.

"Are you like this on the bus too?" I glanced to look at him. He had his eyes shut and when he slowly opened his eyes, he freaked.

"Don't look at me! LOOK AT THE ROAD!" Asher closed his eyes again.

"He's like this on the bus too. Actually," Ivy leaned forward from the back seat, not wearing her seatbelt. "He is like this in any car. The only way he is not as uptight is when he's sleeping, stoned, or drunk." I frowned. The way she describes Asher, it makes me upset that I don't know him like she does.

This was going to be a very long ride.

--

"We're here Ash," I nudged his shoulder. He slowly opened his eyes and looked all around him.

"Oh goodness, I'm not dead!" Asher shrieked, slightly offending me.

"Hey! I'm not a bad driver." I pouted turning to  leave the car.

When I looked at the pier and saw that it had something like an amusement park, I laughed. It reminded me of the summer carnival Asher, Becca, and I snuck off to.

"That's not fair!" Becca whined as Asher and I got on the Faris wheel.

"Sorry, not enough room. Maybe you shouldn't have eaten all those candy apples!" Asher joked, making Becca flip him off. She began to curse a string of beautiful words at us, bit it became muffled by the noise at the fair. People laughed, screamed, and talked.

When we got up, I had to close my eyes. Heights make my stomach drop. It takes a few seconds of  forcing myself to stare at the ground until I can become composed.

"I never want to come down!" Asher spread his arms above his head. "Let's never go down Wills. Let's stay here and learn to fly!" He turned to look at me with excitement gleaming in his brown eyes. Since it was nearing night, the lights from the other rides and the ferris wheel made Asher angelic- No. I'm not going to start this again.

"What about Becca? The bathroom? FOOD? The important things we need?" I gave him a sly smile, knowing he didn't think about it and didn't want to. He gave me a pout and I felt my mouth go dry.

"I'm only kidding Wills. Gosh, you take things too seriously." He held onto the handle bars and looked down at the blur of people and lights.

"Let's spot the snot!" He excitedly cheered, clearing his throat.

"I go first. Last time you went first." I stuck my tongue out. Spot the Snot was a game Becca, Asher, and I played when we were looking down at people from high places. We would spot to see if we could find people or things we described.

"Okay, I got it. Spot the Snot: I want that toy daddy!" I tried to not look at the direction of them. A boy was in front of a stand tossing things and apparently missed. From up here, it looked like he was begging his father or brother to win something for him.

"Over there!" Asher pointed in the right direction.

"Nope." I smiled and Asher hit my shoulder, knowing well that I lied.

"That's cheating!" He giggled, making me giggle.

"William?" Ivy brought my attention back to them. "Did you even hear what I said?" I shook my head, slightly embarrassed.

"I said, let's go and get bracelets and ride everything." Ivy didn't give me a chance to reply. She walked back to me and laced her arm through mine, directing us to the ticket booth.

After we got our bracelets, I let Ivy and Asher choose the rides and games. They acted like it was their first time here, which I'm pretty sure wasn't the case.

When the sun began to set, I was surprised that I wasn't tired. I was pumped and enjoying this. Asher seemed to have let whatever awkwardness we had go and looked relaxed. The entire time, I looked at Asher I began to see his charisma. When he talked and laughed, I couldn't help but think that he was beautiful.

"Ohh yes! Let's do the ferris wheel!" Asher pointed to the ferris wheel that had its lights on. I smiled because I hoped that this would make things okay for us. I hoped it would make things feel like they did before I ruined everything.

"The hot dog isn't sitting well with me," Ivy clutched her stomach, "You two go without me. I might be a while." She pointed to the women's bathroom sign.

"Gross. Text me if you want to leave okay? Or if you're really not feeling well. I mean it." Asher let his arm untangle from Ivy's. She nodded and smiled reassuringly at us.

The line went by surprisingly faster than I thought it would. Asher and I talked about the rides and the place excitedly. We joked around and showed each other stupid Tumblr posts and Instagram photos. It felt like we were okay; like we were young again. It seriously felt like I was dreaming.

"Spot the Snot?" I asked him tentatively when we sat down and the cart began to move. He sat still and then broke into a grin.

"Fuck yes, okay. I start this time!" It all felt surreal and nostalgic. And suddenly, we were back to when we were best friends.

But as everything, all things come to an end eventually.
