The Talk out takes
We've all been through The Talk in school. The really awkward one where you learn exactly what happens on your period and all the rest of it.
That's the 'S' part of RSE (relationship and sexuality education.)
But let's focus on the 'R' part for now. If you live in Ireland, I assume you've seen the DVD schools use in 5th-6th class, right? And I assume you've heard the person going on about how you'll probably get a boyfriend/girlfriend as you get older.
Ok, well done, good job so far; encouraging teens to go out there and get their hearts broken and shit. What's next?
Notice how this rant is titled 'The Talk out takes'? Why do you think that is?
Because, in RSE, there is absolutely nothing mentioned about LGBT.
That's 'lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender' if you didn't know.
Around the age of 10-18/20, teenagers will begin to question which gender they're attracted to. You might as well tell them in school as, this being Ireland, it probably isn't mentioned in the home.
Why isn't it mentioned in RSE either?
Have you ever wondered that?
The only teen couple you see on the DVD is a hetero one (a boy and a girl.) Why doesn't the voice over say that you might begin questioning if you are straight? Why isn't there a gay/lesbian teen couple in the DVD? Even the teacher doesn't mention it.
My question for you: why is this?
Does the Irish education system have anything to do with it? Is there actually ANYTHING to do with LGBT in the curriculum?
