Chapter 3

*September*

I thought my family wasn't going to come to me at all. I thought they would have left me alone, like I so obviously wished for after I was betrayed.

       But I thought wrong.

On a Friday night, I was marking the quizzes that my students took that day when someone knocked on my door. I sighed, getting up from the table to answer it. And when I did, I almost shut the door.

I couldn't though, because Lydia quickly put her foot in the way so I couldn't close the door. "What do you want?" I asked.

"I just wanted to talk," Lydia said. "Can I come in?"

"No," I said. "And there's nothing to talk about."

"I think you and I both know that there is," she said.

I raised my eyebrows. "No, there isn't. You were constantly hooking up with Ian and let me guess, now that I'm gone, you're dating him, right?" Her looking down at the ground was confirmation. "That's what I thought."

"Charlie, come on," Lydia said. "What did you expect me to do? I love him."

"That doesn't give you an excuse to hook up with him," I said. "And if you loved me, your sister, then you wouldn't have done it. Now please leave. I don't want to talk to you or anybody else."

"Charlie, you're being selfish," Lydia said. "You're shutting out your family and for what? Because Ian chose me over you?"

"Me? Selfish?" I asked. "I am not selfish. And I'm not shutting you out because he chose you over me. I shutting you out because everyone knew about it and didn't tell me. You didn't tell me. You didn't even feel guilty about it. We've been through so much together as sisters and you lied to me and went behind my back. Maybe, just maybe, I wouldn't have been mad if you told me that you love him or if you told me about it the first time it happened. Now leave. I don't want to see you or anybody else ever again."

"Fine," Lydia said. "I tried. I really did. But don't blame me when you have nobody here for you."

When she left, I shut the door. She didn't try at all. And I don't care if I had nobody here for me. That was better than being betrayed.

I went back to marking the quizzes, but after I finished one of the classes, there was another knock at the door. I got up again, hoping that it wasn't anyone in my family or hoping that Lydia came back.

It wasn't, but now seeing who it was, I kind of hoped it was my family.

"Hi," Tony said. "Sorry to bother you, but my internet is down and it won't be fixed until Sunday night, but I really need to get some work down, so can I use your internet until then?"

       "No," I said.

"Please?" Tony asked. "Come on, you're a teacher too. You know what it's like to be stressed over the weekend when you're trying to plan your lesson out. It's like that, but ten times worse because I have no internet."

I sighed. "Does my WiFi reach your apartment?"

       "Actually, no," he said.

"How?" I asked. "Don't you live, like, two floors below me?"

"Yes, but it doesn't reach," Tony said. "So, would it be okay if I worked here for the weekend until I get it done? Please? I'll owe you big time. Anything you want, name it."

"Well, I'm kind of in the mood for pizza," I said. "If you order and pay for it, then you can work here."

"Deal," Tony said. "Thank you so much. I'm just going to get my stuff."

When he walked off, I rubbed my forehead. Why did I say yes? Oh, right. Because no matter how much I denied it, I liked Tony. A lot. I didn't want to and I was trying really hard to stay away from him, but it was next to impossible, even more so with him being in the same apartment building as me.

Tony soon came back with the stuff he needed and set it on the table across from me. He ordered a pizza before getting to work. "So, what's the WiFi password?" he asked.

"I'm not telling you," I said. "I'll put it in."

"It will be easier to just tell me," Tony said. "It's not like I'm going to use it after the weekend. Well, unless you expect me to sit outside of your apartment and go on it."

"Fine," I said before telling him the password. He thanked me before typing it into his laptop and getting to work.

Tony tried making some conversation, but I either glared at him to make him stop talking or answered with one word. He was really not taking the hint at all.

When the pizza arrived, Tony got up and went to get it, paying for it as well. He then set it in the middle of the table and we began eating it.

I finished marking the quizzes, so I stacked them up and placed them in my folder before getting up from the table and sitting in the living room to watch TV. I had to do something to distract me so Tony wouldn't try talking to me.

He didn't, luckily, finally taking the hint that I wasn't going to talk to him. He just continued doing whatever work he was doing quietly, not even looking my way.

Around eleven o'clock, I was going to ask Tony how long he was planning on staying for, but when I looked in his direction, I found him sleeping, his head rested on the spot beside his laptop.

I turned off the TV and stood up, wondering if I should wake him up or let him sleep. In the end, I decided to just let him sleep because waking him up would take too much work. That, and he looked pretty cute sleeping.

I sighed. Why couldn't I stop thinking about him like that?

Tony is cute when he sleeps. Just saying. So adorable and peaceful.
