"Mommy! Daddy! Look!" My eight year old self called out to my oblivious parents. "It's a tokay gecko! Miss. Matthews taught me about them this year! Look at his pretty blue color! Can we paint my room blue sometime? I'm sick of the girly pink."
My father had just gotten off of the phone with who must have been a fancy business person, and sighed. "Cj darling, why can't you be more of a girl? Girls are supposed to love pink and want to grow up to be ballerinas. This is just silly." I crossed my arms and huffed at the man in front of me. How dare he?
I twisted my blue baseball cap around, so it faced backwards and stormed off to the big tank in the middle of the aquarium, which contained three beautiful turtles.
This trip was supposed to be a "family bonding experience." My parents had felt the need to take me to California after I confronted them about neglecting me. They were always away for work, all over the world. Leaving me home for weeks on end in the care of my big brother, Theodore.
According to his girl "friends" that he brought home, Theo was the "hottest" guy in school. I didn't get it though, I had checked his temperature and he had seemed alright to me. Weird.
My big brother was my idol. There when nobody else was. Except my dog Zeus, of course. Theo had the prettiest blue eyes. It was like watching the clouds go by in the sky when ever I looked at him. I was jealous, mine were boring and look like grass. He was super tall, like way taller than me. Not fair at all. Along with the rest of the family, he was gifted with luscious blond hair.
And, he's the best football player I know. I love going to his practices and games. It's the closest i'll get to playing football. Dad says girls are too fragile to play. I think he's just a meany.
I walked back over to my wonderful parents sitting on a bench and asked if I could go to the gift shop. Mommy dearest got out her purse, gave me a single hundred dollar bill, and sent me on my way. Stupid rich people.
After making my way to the gift shop, I needed to find something for Theo. Soon enough, two bracelets caught my eye. The bracelets were black with green turtles. The words "Brother" and "Sister" were engraved on each. Perfect.
I payed the lady, Cara as her name tag read. She looked concerned that I was all alone, paying with a hundred dollar bill.
"Sweety . . . Where are your parents?" She furrowed her eyebrows and looked around. The shop was empty. I looked down. "Um . . . Who knows. Probably outside on the phone." Her eyes grew weary. I hated pity. "What's your name hun?" I smiled at her friendliness. "I'm Cj!" It came out a little more excitedly than planned. "Well, Cj. How about we wrap this up all pretty for a nice surprise for your brother?" She asked with a small smile. I looked up at her as my smile grew. I quickly nodded and watched carefully as her fingers delicately danced with the blue paper.
She tied a black ribbon around it and handed me the small box. "There you go! Have a nice day, Cj" After tying the bracelet around my small wrist, a whispered a thank you to the nice lady and skipped away.
"I'm ready to go now mommy . . ." She held up one finger and motioned for me to sit down with them. After her being on the phone for a few minutes, we quietly left the aquarium and were off to the airport.
I pulled out my iPod for the flight back to Florida. I selected a song by the State Champs, one of my brothers favorite bands. I slowly fell asleep as i hummed the rhythm of the song. Soon enough I was out.
A few hours later we were waiting for the family chauffeur by the baggage claim. He took our small bags and walked us to the car.
I unbuckled my seatbelt as soon as we pulled into the long driveway, anxious to see my brother. Only to find out, he was no where to be found. I guess the loser will have to wait for his present.
I put the box on his pillow with a piece of paper next to it. It simply said, "I love you." In black ink. I quickly made my way to my room, plopped down on my messy bed and went to sleep.
Not too long after I was awoken by Theo barging into my room to give me a hug. He must have just gotten home. "Sorry Cj, I didn't mean to wake you but I just wanted to say thanks." I smiled and lifted my wrist to show him my matching bracelet. He gasped and faked his astonishment. "Cj! Do you know what this means?" I was confused, it was simply just a bracelet. "Um . . . No Theo what does it mean?" He gasped louder at my confusion. "Come on Cj! It means must never take these off, to show our unbreakable bond! Let the whole world know that these turtles show I have the best sister ever!" I laughed and hugged him tight.
"Of Course Theo."
