Prologue

Branches whipped my face as I ran as fast as I could. Blood trickled down my chin but I paid no attention. I pushed forward, my dress getting tangled in the process while my heart was thudding faster in my chest. Above me, the moon shone bright through the breaking of the night clouds. Beyond me I heard rapid footsteps following in my direction and as I turned around, I caught a glimpse of a dark figure merging in to the dark shadows of the dense trees. Even though I knew he was long gone, I didn’t want to take the risk.

As soon as I reached the clearing in the middle of the forest, I collapsed on my knees, bruising them in the process. I tried taking huge gulps of air to fill my lungs but no matter how much I breathed in, my lungs would just not fill up. All of a sudden my world tilted on its axis and the next thing I know is that I am lying on my side, my arm painfully crushed against my sweat cladded body and the closely packed mud covered in dry leaves.

“Emerith, oh Emerith.” No! Why can’t he just leave me alone? The rapid steps returned, echoing through unusually quiet forest. I lay there, not bothering to get up. There is no point. No matter how much I run, I could never hide, well at least from him. Something cold dripped down my face and noticed that I was crying. The salty tears mixed with the coppery blood and fell into my mouth making me cringe at the horrid taste. Unintentionally, I curl up into a ball on my side and screwed my eyes shut, anxiously waiting for whatever is going to happen in the next few moments.

Slowly but surely I could hear his footsteps grow louder and louder. Suddenly I could feel his presence in the clearing. He was inching closer and closer to my body. I could feel his gaze burning a hole right through the back of my head. I could feel his breath upon my body. I could feel his hands reaching out to touch me but it’s as if he could feel my discomfort in this situation, he pulled back his hand and sat down by me.

“When are you going to trust me, Emerith?” he questioned softly. His voice rang through the silent forest. I opened my eyes and sat up. Not looking at him, I whispered quietly, sounding vulnerable,

“I don’t know, Drew. I don’t know.”
