1. When He Knew

He came to their family when he was a mere kitten. His other brothers and sisters had been sent away to other homes and soon it was his turn.

He was not fearful about leaving his mother like his siblings. The only thing he was really worried about, was being christened a stupid name, like Whiskers or Snowflake. He liked the name his mom had given him and saw no need for another.

One by one he watched his siblings carted off in small boxes as their respective humans left the house with them, mostly haggard looking adult males who had the feel of a large family.

The day he was to be taken away, Prince sat by the window feeling a tingle of excitement. He was eager to know the world beyond the yard he had grown up in and was scarcely paying his mother any mind, who seemed to get teary eyed every time she looked at him.

“Prince,” she said at one point, “you must always remember that I love you, no matter where you are or how badly you feel.”

He glanced briefly at her. He knew that out of all her children, he was her favourite. However, he was finding her sentiments increasingly annoying. It was not that he did not love her. It was the fact that they all knew this day would come and he saw no point in crying over it.

“Mother,” he said to her as he resumed staring out the window, “I'm only going away forever. Not leaving for the butcher house. It is a day to be happy. I'm going out to meet the world.”

She shook her head sadly and then slowly began licking him. He let her. He thought he knew how she must feel and he wondered if he should atleast tell her that he loved her.

The sudden approach of a vehicle buried the thought in the back of his mind as he realized that his human had come at last.

He dashed away from his mother and jumped unto the plush burgundy cushion which overlooked the front door. He heard the engine die and waited impatiently for the familiar chime of the doorbell.

When it came, the old human who lived in the house crept lazily down the stairs. She was clad in a pink nightgown, even though it was almost noon. He disliked the colour and he disliked her. He felt sorry for his mother who had to remain behind with the old absent minded thing.

“I'm coming. I'm coming,” she wheezed as she puffed to the door and pulled it open.

“Prince,” his mother was beside him once more,“remember The Rules. It is very important that you never let the humans see signs of intelligence or that you understand their speech.”

“I know, Mother,” he said dismissively, not taking his eyes off the figure standing in the front door. It was a lady this time and she was beautiful with reddish brown hair and dimples. The old human was inviting her in and gesturing in his direction.

“Keep yourself safe Prince,” his mother said quietly. “I'll think of you everyday.”

He nodded stifly. He felt that this was the time to tell his mother he loved her, but he had never been big on emotions.

The pretty lady was approaching him with an emerald green box in hand.

“Mother, I... I'll think of you as well.”

He felt her pad away to make room for the woman was now smiling down at him.

“This one's a catch,” she said to the old human, “those are exceptional eyes.”

As she reached down to pick him up, he heard his mother stifle a sob.

“Carly will fall in love. Thanks again Miss Berkeley.”

He heard the old human reply and then she was carrying him outside to the car under the heat of the midday sun. The woman placed him in the front seat next to her and and started the engine.

Immediately, a cool wind filled the car. It was a stark contrast to the temperature outside.

“Alright,” the woman said, reversing from the yard, “let's get you home buddy.”

He fell asleep at some point during the ride. The woman didn't say anything more to him and he liked that just fine. He wanted to be alone with the thoughts in his head.

After almost an hour, they finally pulled up in the garage of a tidy looking house, with a small garden of white roses at its sides. The woman killed the engine and lifted him out of the car. The artificial air faded in the outdoors and he noted appreciatively that the air was a lot fresher than the one back home. The woman climbed the steps leading up to the front door and let herself in.

     “Carly, mommy's home!”

There was a squeak from upstairs as a child of nine came charging down the stairs.

“Did you get it mom, did you get it?”

“I sure did.” She set his box down on the floor.

His field of vision was suddenly filled by a large beaming face with over enthusiastic eyes.

     “Aww, it's so cute!”

He barely suppressed the urge to claw at the girl as she swung him from the box and hugged him to her.

“I'll call her Sophia. What do you think Mom?”

Sophia?!

His fur bristled in disgust.

     “I think that's a fine name.”

The very thing he had dreaded. He wanted nothing more than to claw this human's eye out.

“What's all this?” a voice floated down the stairs. A lean girl with long reddish brown hair was descending slowly. She had the most graceful walk he had ever seen a human with: light and precise and ever so soft he could scarcely pick up the sound.

She paused when she reached the bottom and her light grey eyes settled on him.

“Oh,” she said, sounding almost bored, “it's a cat.”

He was immediately entranced by her.

“I'm calling her Sophia,” the short overenthusiastic human hugged him again. He struggled to keep his eyes on the girl with the grey eyes. She was looking at him closely.

“How do you know it's a she? Maybe it's a he.”

“Of course it's a girl. Why would it be a boy?”

The annoying human finally placed him on the floor. The moment his feet touched the ground, he began to walk slowly over to the grey-eyed girl who was now staring at him in surprise. He sat before her, swishing his tail gently from side to side.

“He walks like a prince,” she smirked.

“And you walk like a queen,” he told her, knowing that she would only hear a meow.

Her lips twitched faintly as though she had understood the compliment, but she couldn't stop the smile that was coming from her eyes.

“His name is Prince,” she said simply and turned to go back up the stairs.

That was the moment he fell for her.

A/N: Hey guys. Please let me know what you think about this story. I know it's pretty unusual since you don't know many cats who have fallen in love with their owners. ;)

I'm sort of experimenting here and I would really appreciate it if you would share a comment about what you would like to see happen or whether it's good or not.

Remember that if you like it, make that tiny little 🌟 orange :)
