CHAPTER ONE
Madison Deep's POV:
Pull back slowly, and let go. Hearing that sharp squeal of surprise coming off of the animal's lips never fails to make me cringe. In the Wild county, we tend to plants and animals, but that doesn't help much with meals. Each bite I take of a tiny helpless squirrel or an ox fills me to the brim with guilt.
Scooping up my catch of the day, a white and black dotted rabbit, I quickly pulled my knife from its neck. The rabbits lifeless body slumped in my hand. Feeling gross, I flung it into my homemade pouch and decided to sell it for a better, more sanitary meal.
I swung my belt of knives over my shoulder along with my pouch. My feet dragged from grogginess. When I looked up to open the fence to the main part of our village, my eyes halted on the sun. It was around nine and I knew I should be getting home soon. Today was March 12, the day
of the Gathering in which two contestants were chosen to compete for fame. They didn't just compete to win, they fought for their lives. This IS the Survival Games, so most kids don't make it out alive. In fact, only one does.
"Madison, did you git me some game today?" Mr. Fallon, the towns butcher asked in his old croaky voice.
He was one of my best costumers, and always gave me a fair share of greens back.
"Why of course, Mr. Fallon." I answered politely and handed him the rabbit in exchange for a sack of potatoes and rice.
After nodding my thanks, I turned on my heel and headed west. My regular sized home was on the west, which was the more poorer side, of town. I spotted my younger sister, Rosie, playing on the sidewalk. Rosie was almost 11, but not yet old enough to enter into the Survival Games. You had to be thirteen to enter, for safety rules. You must be thinking 'safety rules? This is the survival games!'
Atleast the council had the heart to wait until we were older to kill us. Yes, I did say they had a heart even if a small one at that.
"Madie, mother says we must go bathe ourselves for the gathering!" Rosie hugged me before leading the way inside.
For my house being regular, it sure was small. Than again, small became the new regular long before the War to End All Wars ended. We lived in a nation called Apartious. As you may be able to detect, the word Apart is inside this jumble.
They named it Apartious because the nations fell apart, and we're no longer United.
My mother instructed me to wash the grime from my body before dressing in my best garments.
I took a warm cloth and scrubbed my skin raw. The cloth left marks littered around my skin. I searched my closet for my pale pink dress that my grandmother had given me, right before she passed away. Ah, there it was!
After slipping it over my head and straightening it out, I combed my hair back and clipped my bangs up. It gave me a more Fresh look.
"Madie, we must go! Hurry," My mother instructed as she ran onto the streets.
I scooped up my sweater, incase the weather decided to turn on us, and followed obediently.
"Madie, you look so pretty!" Rosie complimented and gave me her flashy grin.
We arrived just in time for me to take my place next to the other kids whom had entered. Our governor appeared, the first woman since Apartious began, and talked to us about our county. She told the story of the War, and even finished of talking of the Survival Games.
"Now, I am proud to present your Lady Representative for the Wild county of whom will participate in the Survival Games," Governor Willis continued.
I had nothing to worry about since my name was in the basket as one of thousands.
-"Madison Deep! Come up, sweetie and stand here," Governor Willis instructed.
I gasped from shock and saw my mother and Rosie begin to sob. Two of our legislators pulled me onto the stage. I was stricken from shock, and unable to speak.
"Thank you Madison. Now, I proudly present Mr. Dane Maggle as your male contestant," Willis finished.
Oh no. It couldn't be! Dane Maggle, the conceited, player, and my crush since kindergarden? I think I may faint.
And then, he's standing before me, flashing a cocky grin that I was to slap of of his face. How could I kill him and many others, when I couldn't even kill a rabbit without feeling guilty?
