The Ride

I stared out the window at the trees. The bus rolled down the interstate. It was loud and the noise bothered me. I was a quiet person, and I mainly kept to myself. I had no best friend, or really any friends. It was not that I was unlikeable, but only that I didn't mingle or try to make new friends. The green scenery passed by fast and I tried to make out the individual trees. The sky was a light gray all around. I liked storms. They were majestic to me, and they brought a certain comfort. It was almost as if storms provided the perfect outdoor lighting. I also found the lightning to be one of the most beautiful things in nature. I was busy daydreaming about the sky and storms when the bus hit a manhole. I snapped back to attention. Then I heard my name.

"Amy...Amy!"

I looked over to the seat across from me. A bright eyed girl looked back at me.

"Hey. I was wondering if you knew if that guy is dating someone."

She obviously didn't know me. I was the last person you would ask for that kind of info. I turned however to look at who she was pointing to. His name was Drew Peters. He was a junior who I had every single class with. He looked at me and smiled. I quickly drew my head into the seat. The girl asked again, "Sooo... Is he dating anyone?"

"No."

I was short and to the point. That meant less time that I had to talk to someone. She nodded in approval and waved her hand at him. He ignored her which caused her to sulk back down into her seat. I turned back to the window. I was almost back into my daze when someone slid into my seat. I jerked back. It was him. Drew Peters was sitting next to me. Why! I just wanted to be alone. I decided that it would be best if I just turned back to the window. He then tapped my shoulder. I turned slower this time. I gave a sort of dazed and confused look. He responded by chuckling softly.

"Are you new here?"

I really didn't know how to respond to that. We had gone to school together for 7 years in a row, and he didn't remember me. I ignored him and turned back to the window.

"Wait, Amy. I was totally kidding. I remember you 'Carrots'. We were best friends all through middle school."

I turned back and smiled. He was right. We were friends in middle school. He began giving off a confused look as well. It was probably due to the fact that I hadn't said a word to him in five minutes.

"Sorry... I was processing. So why are you sitting with me."

"Because I wanted to talk to you. You're pretty and you were my best friend. Then you kinda zoned out on me."

He was right. I had zoned out on him. When we got to high school I bounced. In my defense though I am agoraphobic so all the crowds scared me.

"You know me Drew. That wasn't my style. Plus, you kinda left me too. You became mister popular and I became the silent one."

"you know I would have still been your best friend." He consoled.

"I know."

As he got up to leave and go to his seat, he said, "Don't be my stranger carrots." And left.

I smiled as I turned back to the window to set back into my gaze.
