Ch 13
This is after she reached the crevice in the snow. I was too lazy to write about that // I was awakened from my light sleep by a noise. I guessed I'd been asleep for roughly an hour. I didn't move my head but opened my eyes a slit and looked around. I was facing the wall in the same position I'd fallen asleep in. It was very very cold and dark. Darker then I knew was possible. There was no chance of a fight at the moment since the person, for it was definitely a human, couldn't see me and I couldn't see it. I moved my hand silently and wrapped it around the hilt of my sword. I went to stand as a light switched on. It was covered with a hand to dim it and I still couldn't see the figure as its back was to me. "Endy?" I heard the shadow whisper. "Ben!" I whispered as loud as was possible in the arena. All thoughts of concealment were forgotten. I leaped off of the narrow shelf of ice where I'd been sleeping and ran to him. He wrapped me in a hug and squeezed me tight. "I didn't know if it was you." he said. "It gets really dark early." That would explain why I hadn't seen any faces in the sky yet. "And I didn't know if you were alive. I'm just glad this was the right cave. I didn't fancy fighting someone in the dark." I hugged him tight. "It's okay. I'm alright." I said. He nodded. We stood there for a few more moments and then broke apart. I looked up at him and stared into his eyes. My arms and legs were trembling and I realized how scared I had been that he could have died and left me here in theirs wasteland by myself. I buried my head in his chest and drew a shaky breath. "I'm glad your alright." he whispered. "Me too."I pulled away and led him further into the crevice and we sat on the ground. He slung his backpack off of his back and unzipped it. "Let's take a look at our gear." He squinted at my face, "unless you want to throw me out in the snow." My eyes widened in shock at the thought. "No!" I said. He smiled and I pulled out my pack too. His contained a water bottle, a length of rope, a small container of matches, and a sleeve of crackers. I dumped the contents of mine on the ground and sorted through them. My backpack had a water bottle, a knife, a pair of pocket warmers, a bag of dried fruit, a magnifying glass, and a ball of lint. In addition we had my sword, his spear, and five spare tips for it. We decided to keep the supplies that we had and repacked our bags. Just as we finished the anthem started playing. We crawled to the opening of the slot together and looked out. The faces from the blood bath included the boy and girl from D3, the girl from D4, the boy from D5, the boy and girl from D6, the girl from D8, the boy from D9, the boy and girl from D11, and the boy from D12. The seal lit up the sky again and then it went out plunging us back into darkness. I could hear Ben rummaging around in the snow for his flashlight but I laid a hand on his arm. "No. Save the batteries. We don't have extras and we need to save them." I heard him nod and slip the flashlight into his bag. He took my hand and we head to the back of the cave, feeling the walls and ceiling so we didn't crack our heads on the low roof of the crevice. We reached the back and sat down. It was so cold I scooted closer to Ben and rested my head on his shoulder. He wrapped his arm around me. "Get some sleep Endy. I'll keep watch and wake you in a few hours." I was so tired. I nodded and wrapped my arms around my knees. The haunting, dead, silence of the area accompanied me to sleep.
