Defense and Prosecution

"Yeah, just be sure not to call him that... He'll be fine."

"Okay... Is that the only word he's responded to?"

"Yeah."

"Tom, it's going to be alright."

"Yeah, I know."

"Have you slept lately?"

"No, but that's okay... I just want to protect him, ya know?"

"He is protected... We can get some guards for you."

"No, you've already helped us enough... Thank you, Ethan."

My eyes fluttered open, the bright light peering in through the window.

"Good morning, Jordan," Ethan said, scooting his chair closer to my bed side. A woman carefully followed after him, studying my every move.

"Tom, what's going on?" I whispered, my voice weak and scratchy.

"Ethan will explain it. I'm going to get you some water, I'll be right back, okay?" Tom murmured, kissing my cheek before exiting the room.

Meeting Ethan's eyes, I tried to sort out what had happened. I don't remember much of anything, except a needle being shoved into my arm.

"Jordan, your doctor put you on a very heavy sedative drug, so you're going to feel nauseous and woozy, so if you need a break, tell me," Ethan explained.

"Okay..." I mumbled. "Why did I need a sedative?"

"We're trying to figure that out..." Ethan said, pulling his notepad out of his pocket. "This is your lawyer, Ms. Mulaney."

"You can call me Ingrid," the woman interuppted. Her long, brown hair curled around her face, draping over her shoulders. She wore a casual purple cardigan with jeans, a small pen tucked behind her ear.

"She's my partner in crime. I think you're going to like her," Ethan said with a soft smile, jotting some things down.

"T-That's good," I mumbled, praying Tom would hurry up. I wanted him in the room.

Looking down at my leg, I discovered my bad leg and arm were covered in a plastic cast, restricting me from moving them. They only needed bandaging before, why did I need casts all of a sudden?

"Alright, Jordan. We have court dates for you. Fortunately for us, they're pretty soon. Unfortunately for you, you're going to have to be in a wheelchair when we go," Ethan muttered.

"We're going to try our best to keep you off the witness stand," Ingrid said, resting her arm against my bed.

"For our prosecution case, it's going to be easy to keep you off the stand. You go up there one time, then you're done," Ethan said, crossing his legs in his seat. "But for the defense case..."

Ethan paused, glancing over at Ingrid.

"We don't really know how the defense case is going to go... There's no predicting it," Ingrid cooed, her violet eyes examining every facial expression I made.

My head swam, the room spinning. None of this made sense right now.

"What case is the defense case?" I asked, resting my head against the back of my headboard.

"The one where James is suing you. It's called a defense case, because we're defending your rights. The prosecution case is the kidnapping case, and we're making sure he's going to jail," Ethan said quietly, unbuttoning the top button on his business shirt. His phone buzzed in his hands, "I gotta take this, I'm sorry."

As he exited the room, Ingrid took Ethan's place, sitting closer to me.

"Jordan..." Ingrid cooed, leaning back in her chair. "Can I ask you something?"
