chapter eight
maya

~

Farkle and I walk into class a few minutes early. "Are you okay, Maya?"

"Couldn't be better."

He frowns as we grab our seats and set out stuff down. "Even after yesterday?"

"Oh yeah," I say with a smirk.

"Is there something I missed-"

"I kissed her." I grin, then turn around to face the front just as everyone else piles in.

I hear him slide off of his chair and land on the ground with a thump. Everyone continues to walk and step over him as the school bell rings. Riley walks in holding Lucas' hand, making me scoff - loud enough for them both to hear - and fold my arms across my chest.

Mr. Matthews walks in a few seconds after, setting his briefcase down and picking up chalk to write on the board. He finishes and turns to face us.

"The Acadians. Farkle, would you like to start?"

"Still on the ground, Sir," Farkle calls from the floor.

"Any idea when you'll be up?"

"Not sure, Sir."

I laugh and sigh happily. "Please continue, Matthews."

He frowns slightly then shrugs. "The Acadians were always loyal to Britain. They signed an oath of allegiance to the British Crown in 1730. But that didn't stop them from deporting every last one of them. The Acadians were forced out of their homes - all they could take were belongings they could carry."

"So what you're saying, Mr. Matthews, is that even though the Acadians were loyal to their best friend, the best friend still decided to push them away and lock lips with someone else?"

"Maya." Riley snapped, under her breath.

"I don't really know what you're-"

"The great people of Acadia only wanted a nice, safe sanctuary in Britain. But then they suddenly were a threat to them and things got confusing, so then, instead, they were deported. Is that right?"

Mr. Matthews looks at me, puzzled. "I guess so, Maya."

"Well isn't that interesting."

"Maya, I need to talk to you."

I turn around. Lucas stands up and nods at Mr. Matthews before pulling me out of my seat and dragging me outside.

I slap his arm off of me. "What."

"I want Riley."

"Oh yeah, go ahead and talk about her like she's a prize."

He ignores my comment. "She said something the other day, and I realized that maybe you're wrong. Maybe I can be that someone for her."

My face hardens. "First of all, I'm never wrong, second of all, sorry Huckleberry, but you're really not enough for her."

"Do you even know how upset she's been? You know, I can't even recall the last time Riley was... Riley. Is that not a wake up call for you?"

"Lucas, you were the one who told me to go find her," I say, trying not to picture Riley being sad because I'm not in the mood for that at the moment.

"Yeah. Cause I thought you would take heed of that opportunity that I literally handed to you. But instead you made her devastated, and- and confused, and upset."
