a period of heaven

I twirled my lock. 24. 17. 2-

"Hey!"

I jumped, the voice appearing out of nowhere. When I glanced over, I saw Bree Dooley-Davenport.

Bree was always a welcome interruption. I couldn't believe my luck when we had been assigned as lab partners. I got to spend an entire class period sitting next to, working, and laughing with Bree Davenport. Ugh, what was not to like? I was in heaven for a single period every day.

I put a hand to my chest dramatically, laughing. "You can't sneak up on me like that."

"Sorry!" She looked genuinely apologetic, face reddening, Man, that was cute. "I just wanted to talk about the project! The, um, the chemistry project."

"I figured," I smiled, leaning against the lockers, "as it's the only one. Unless we have some other secret project I don't know about...?"

"No, no, just chem!" Bree laughed nervously.

"Hey, hey, I'm joking." I tried to give her a comforting smile as I straightened up. "Don't worry. What did you want to tell me?"

"Come to my house."

"Sorry?" That's forward.

"That's, sorry! Can you come over to my house so we can review the data from the experiments we conducted in class? 'Cause I think it would make the project way easier in the future." She smiled as she finished speaking, seemingly relieved at getting through her request.

"I think that's a great idea." I praised. She beamed.

I hummed. "Does tonight at six work?"

"Tonight at six is perfect! Here's my address." She passed me a piece of paper. "See you then!"

"Sounds good." I turned to my locker, trying to sneak a glance over at her, but she was already gone.

♡♡♡♡♡

I approached Bree's house, hands suddenly clammy. I attempted to wipe them on my pants, taking deep breaths all the way up the driveway. I'd gotten my heart rate down to passable before I knocked.

We're just lab partners. It's just Bree.

I mentally scoffed. Just Bree. There's no such thing.

I knocked again. One of her brothers, the shorter one, opened the door. He smirked at me, calling back into the house: "Oh, Bree!"

I heard frantic footsteps and there she appeared, next to her brother. She shooed him away (Chase? Was that his name?) and gestured me inside.

I stepped through the doorway, quietly appreciating the decor. It was very HGTV. Bree sat down on the couch, so I followed her lead and sat next to her. I looked down at the table in front of us, scattered in papers scribbled with formulas.

Bree reddened again, frantically clearing the papers off. "Sorry! I was just trying to do some stuff before you got here."

"No problem! Which ones are from today's lab?"

She handed me the aforementioned papers. I scanned them, nodding.

"This is good stuff. It'll definitely help for the final. I can take these home and transfer them to a spreadsheet, so we can digitally have them in class." I glanced up at Bree, who was staring at me. She was clearly zoned out.

"Bree?"

She blinked and reddened when she realized she'd been staring. "Sorry."

"Hey, you keep apologizing." I looked over at her, eyebrows creased, "Are you okay? Is there any way I can make you more comfortable? I don't want you to feel that you're at fault when you're not."

Bree looked back at me, "Stop that."

I frowned, "Stop...what?"

"Being so nice to me! Nobody is this nice to me, but you are! You barely even know me. We're just lab partners! But you're so nice and you're gorgeous and every class period, I have to sit next to you and fight the urge to kiss you, and at this point, I'm surprised I'm not failing chemistry because I'm just staring at you the whole period—" Her eyes slowly widened as she realized what she'd said. She clamped a hand over her mouth.

I gently reached over and took her hand away from her mouth. I held it in my lap instead.

"Sorry, I know that's a lot, I know it's way too much and I don't blame you if you want to just go home right now, go ahead, I'm not going to stop you. I'll applaud you, actually, because really I think—"

"You want to kiss me?"

"...yes." Bree turned even redder, which I didn't think was possible. She was adorable.

I leaned over, capturing her lips with my own. They were everything that I had imagined them to be over the last six weeks of the semester. The kiss was soft and sweet and strong — just like the girl I was kissing.

When we parted from the kiss, I grinned widely at her. She looked up, dazed.

"You like me?"

"As much as you like me," I chuckled.

She raised an eyebrow, "I seriously doubt that," and captured me in another kiss.

♡♡♡♡♡

After that day, we were partners alright, just not the lab kind.
