Written from Prince Eric's Point of View
I don't remember much from the night my ship went down. It was my sixteenth birthday, there was a huge party going on. Then out of nowhere, a storm hit. I remember the men on the ship scrambling around trying to recover the ship from being pulled down into the deep dark abyss of an ocean. We knew there wasn't just sand and seaweed down there. We heard the stories. We new the tales. There are creatures down there like no other. Mermaids. Of course, I've never seen one myself. But I have heard of sailors being lured over to the rocks where the beautiful creatures enchant men with their voice. A voice so sweet and light, so innocent. No one would ever think they would be staring death in the face. The ships would capsize and the mermaids would watch you drown. A jarring motion of the ship sent me over the edge. I plunged into the black waters, unable to see my surroundings. I must've hit some of the debris falling from the ship, because I blacked out. That's all I remember from that night.
When I awoke next, I was laying in the sand. The sun was beating down, the sand was soft like a blanket and I just laid there. Was I dead? Was I dreaming? I wasn't sure. Finally, a young girl came to my rescue. She had dark hair that flowed in the sea breeze. She propped me up and I coughed up water till I could breathe easy again. Soon enough more people came to me. They took me back to the palace. I have no clue how I wound up on the beach, but I was safe.
Days passed with little going on. I did have a strange feeling that something or someone was watching me. Every time I looked out
My window, not a soul was there. I ignored it. One day, while out for a walk on the beach I saw a girl. She was naked, but her thick hair covered her. I brought her back to the palace and quickly my servants gave her clothes to wear. She was beautiful but for some reason, wouldn't speak. I tried everyday she was here to get her to at least say one word to me, nothing. Nothing worked. She did communicate though. Her body language said it all.
As days passed I grew fond of the young girl. The dumb little child was like a sister of some sort. She still refused to talk. My parents are forcing me to marry, they want to make sure I have an heir for when I'm king. But I am not interested in any of the maidens they bring. To be honest, I much rather marry the girl I found on the beach.
But there was that one girl who rescued me, the one with the flowing dark hair and dark eyes that I got lost in. She entranced me from the moment I saw her.
Her. I'd marry her. The wedding was planned instantaneously. It didn't take long till our wedding day came. The girl I found on the beach attended of course. Still not speaking, but today she seemed different. Almost like she wasn't sure what to think or feel. Oh how I wish she would talk.
Never mind that, all I can think about it my beautiful bride. I can see her walking down the aisle now, a long beautiful white dress. With it's train trailing behind her across the ships deck. Her hair bounced a bit as she walked closer towards me and her eyes had little stars in them.
After the ceremony was done and we danced, I danced with the girl from the beach. She seemed to wince in pain but kept going. I searched her eyes for the words I was hoping to hear, but nothing came. My bride came back and brought me to this little tent aboard the ship. We snuggled and just enjoyed each other's company for a long while.
I don't know how much time passed but eventually, the girl from the beach drew the curtains of the tent back. In her hand was a knife, sharp and shining in the light. She looked at the knife, then at me. She seemed to be debating, going back and forth with herself in her own thoughts. I didn't know how to react. My bride was sleeping next to me, I couldn't stir. If she woke, it'd cause chaos. I just looked at her. The strange, thoughtful girl now with a knife in her hand.
In a blink of an eye, she turned and threw the knife as far as she possibly could into the ocean. The look on her face kills. She seemed so saddened. I didn't know what to do. She just looked at me. I looked back at her. I notice the tent filling with sea foam. Why? How was this happening? We were docked. It's a beautiful day. What was going on? I see the girl slow turn from a human to sea foam. She was dissolving. What was going on? Could this happen? After a few minutes, she was gone. Sea foam being her new form. My new bride started to wake up from her long nap. I kissed her forehead and then held her close to me. I drifted to sleep, that was the last time I ever saw that little mermaid.
