Riley had known about the Riley Matthews committee since eighth grade.

Despite her knowing, and being slowly introduced into the real world, the committee was still in place, and they did their best to preserve Riley's innocence and happiness.

The only issue was, around the end of freshman year, it stopped working.

Riley Matthews went from bright, bubbly, and quirky to sarcastic, shy and rude. Her wardrobe changed drastically, going from its usual bright colors and floral patterns to large t shirts and dark clothing. She started to talk less and less, withdrawing herself from class discussions, even her friend group. She stopped meeting up with her friends after school, or on weekends, or any time in between. Her friends only saw her at school, where she'd sit there with unfocused eyes and her lips sealed tight. She had even gone to locking her bay window.

Riley Matthews had drawn away from her friends because she was afraid that if they found out what had happened to her, they would no longer was to hang out with her. That they would be mortified, shocked by her actions and would want nothing to do with her.

She was especially afraid for the reaction of her boyfriend, Lucas Friar.

They told each other almost everything, and even though Maya Hart was Riley's best friend, she was Lucas's. Riley Matthews was Lucas's safe place, the person he could go to whenever he was having trouble at home, the sunshine in his life. Riley was afraid and ashamed that if he found out, he would stop loving her.

After all, how can someone love her if she didn't even love herself?

The Riley Matthew's committee protected Riley from everything besides the one thing she needed protection from, herself.
