Okay, like I said in the last chapter, I have recently become addicted to the Broadway show, Hamilton. God, it's brilliant! Lin-Manuel Miranda, you rock! I just HAD to do a story with Hamilton in it. This chapter is based off of the song Best of Wives and Best of Women. That song is so sweet! I was mentally crying. Anyways, Damian is Alexander, and Mar'i is Eliza. I changed it from Best of Wives to Best of Hearts, because I didn't want them married in the story. The video above is in no way owned by me. Hope you like the story!
Mar'i turns a bit in the bed. Her face glows in the moonlight. She looks so breathtaking, so at peace. A twinge of guilt catches me for a moment. I deeply regret having to leave her here, but I have to. My mother will kill her if I do not.
My katana, shurikens, and throwing knives are packed away. Along with my additional equipment of explosives, batarangs, and guns. Five days ago, I had received a letter at my apartment. It had been left on my desk. There was no returning address. The letter had been from the League of Assassins. My mother.
She had threatened to kill Mar'i, if I did not agree to meet her by dawn. That was why I was preparing to leave so late in the night, with Mar'i still asleep. Mar'i could not know about my meeting with Talia. If she knew, she would do everything she could to prevent me from leaving, but I could not let Mar'i die. I would choose to die before that would happen.
I did not know what my mother wanted from me, but I would not let her hurt Mar'i. Come alone the letter had said. But this did not mean I couldn't prepare myself with weapons.
Suddenly, I hear Mar'i groan a bit from the bed. I have woken her up. I hastily stow away my weapons, and take out some paperwork for Wayne Enterprises. I quickly take out a pen, and start writing on one of the papers. She turns from her side, and looks at me tiredly with her bright, green eyes.
"Damian?" Mar'i groggily murmurs. She rubs her eyes a bit, and glances at the alarm clock on the bedside. "It's two o'clock. Come back to sleep," she says tiredly.
I lie. "I have an early meeting for Wayne Enterprises."
Mar'i doesn't seem entirely convinced, nor does she seem unconvinced. "But why are you up so early?" she asks.
"I'm not quite finished with work yet." Another lie, but Mar'i must not know.
"It's still dark outside." Her voice complains a bit.
"I know," I respond. "I just need to write something down."
"It's not like you're running out of time, just do it in the morning. It's so early. Can't this wait?"
"Shhh," I hush her gently. I did not intend to disturb Mar'i from her slumber, and she sounds so tired.
"Come back to bed. That would be enough Damian," she says to me softly. This is a request.
"Beloved, I will be back before you know I am gone." The twinge of guilt that I had felt earlier stings me. This must be the worst lie I have told Mar'i. I did not know myself if I would walk away from the League and my mother alive, but I could not tell Mar'i this. Especially this.
"Come back to sleep," Mar'i pleads again.
"The meeting is at dawn." It really is.
"Well, I'm going back to sleep," giving up her attempt to make me return to the bed. Mar'i lays down back on the bed.
"Hey," I say softly. Mar'i really does look beautiful. She always has. I would hate myself forever if I did not tell Mar'i how much I care for her. I put down the pen, and go to her side. "Best of hearts and best of women," I whisper to her.
Mar'i gives me a sleepy smile. We share a long, lingering kiss before I break away and return to my weapons. Mar'i rests her head back on the pillow and closes her eyes, falling asleep again.
- For those of you who don't know who Alexander Hamilton is, this is him.
So, he's the guy on the $10 bill. One of America's founding fathers.
