Harry woke up to the screeching of owls. He looked at Ron, who was still sleeping like nothing had happened. Harry got dressed and went downstairs, desperately waiting for Hermione to come down.
"Harry!"
Before Harry could get a look at the person who said his name, he was hugged by Hermione.
"Where's Ron?" Hermione asked.
"Sleeping," Harry answered.
"Not anymore! Hey, Hermione," Ron said as he walked down the stairs.
"Lets go to the Great Hall!" Hermione suggested.
Harry and Ron agreed as they had nothing to do in the common room.
As they walked to the Great Hall, people pointed at Harry.
Pansy Parkinson and Roger Davies were standing in a corner murmuring.
Harry had his breakfast then went to the common room without Hermione and Ron. On his way, he "bumped" into Draco.
"So, couldn't eat, eh, Potter?" Draco asked, gentler than usually.
"Why are you talking to me?" Harry stopped and looked at Draco.
Draco didn't say anything but looked out the window.
They lapsed into a silence that Harry found a bit comforting.
"Returning for your seventh year, then?" Draco questioned
Harry found himself replying to him.
"Don't know. Everything's so different now. You?"
Malfoy scoffed. "I'm in Slytherin. People'll hate me."
Harry saw the Dark Mark's outline on Draco's arm.
"You know, I don't think they'll care."
"Think about it, Potter. Hogwarts will hate Slytherin more than ever now."
Harry nodded.
"I don't really know what'll happen."
More silence...
"Well, then, see you later, Malfoy," Harry said and started to walk away.
As he walked a bit further, he turned around and saw that Draco was still standing there, looking out the window.
"Aren't you gonna go to your common room?" Harry inquired.
"I hate the dungeons. It stinks and it feels weird there," Draco said with disgust.
Harry thought for a bit.
"Come to Gryffindor Tower with me," he said, in a reluctant voice.
Draco snorted. "A Slytherin in Gryffindor's common room?"
"Well, suit yourself. See you around, Malfoy."
"Draco."
Harry stopped again.
"What?"
Draco looked at him and said, "My name's Draco."
Harry smiled and corrected himself, "See you around, Draco."
"See you, Pott-- Harry."
* * *
The next day, when Harry, Hermione and Ron entered the Great Hall, Harry's eyes scanned the Slytherin table. As he walked towards Gryffindor's table, he looked at Draco and smiled and Draco did the same.
"Saw you talking to Malfoy yesterday," Ron asked as Harry drank some juice.
"We talked and he can be a good friend, you know," Harry replied.
"Friend?!" Ron almost yelled.
"Ron, keep it down!"
"He is a Death Eater, Harry!"
"Was. And it wasn't his choice, anyway," Harry found himself defending Draco.
"Harry, just be careful," Hermione warned.
"He will not murder me, Hermione," Harry retorted.
"He probably could," Ron mumbled.
Draco was receiving the same kind of response at being friends with Harry at his table, though he just ignored Pansy and Millicent Bulstrode rant on and on about Harry.
Harry, Hermione and Ron went back to the common room and the other houses did the same.
Since there was nothing to do, Harry, Hermione and Ron went down to the lake and sat under the shade of the beech tree.
Coincidentally, Harry saw Draco there, sulking in the sun.
Draco saw him and they smiled at each other and carried on with their lives.
