This takes place four years after the first epilogue. I wrote this because a few people wanted a longer epilogue, so here it is! Hope you like it!
Tris
"Shit!" I yelp as boiling, poorly-made soup splatters and explodes all over my bare arm. My brain swimming in a haze of profanities and pain, I frantically search for a dish towel, quickly wiping the steaming liquid off my now viciously burned arm. Little pain tears stung my eyes as my arm quickly reddens, and I mumble a few choice words under my breath. Sighing heavily an my misfortune, I turn back to my over-boiled soup on the stove, mopping up the liquid hat had spilled over the sides. I hear a little sound, as faint as a whisper, coming from the doorway. A small, high pitched giggle.
With a gasp and a realization of what I had said out loud, I whip my head around, searching the for any little ears that could have heard my loudly spoken profanity. Peering around the corner of the kitchen, I see a little flash of red scampering away. My breath gusts out, and I sigh heavily. Once they hear it, they never stop repeating it. Ever.
Wiping my hands down the flowered apron that protected the rest of my body from the boiling liquid, I unfasten the back and pull it off, throwing it in a floral heap in the corner. Turning the corner, I see him plop down of the floor, smiling up at me innocently as he toys with his sister's brown curls. While my daughter, Tori, has Tobias's hair, my son got mine. His dirty blond tangles partially obscure a pair of the deepest blue eyes that I have only seen on one other person, and that person is snickering in the corner as he watches me struggle.
"How's the soup coming, Honey?" He says with an innocent smile. His eyes, on the other hand, have a sly glint. I am about to answer with a snappy comeback, but the little imp at my feet, dressed in his red pajamas, a asks me a dreaded question.
"Mommy, what is a shit?" He asks. His little sister squirms with delight, happily mumbling the profanity in her rocker. My useless husband bursts into laughter, and I press my lips tightly together. I don't see the hilarity of the situation.
Okay, tread carefully here, Tris. "Well, Andrew, that is a word that, uh..." My mind is blanking. What the hell am I going to tell this kid to satisfy his curiously? He is basically me, so he will never stop prying till he gets answers. "That word is only to be said quietly when you are alone, and..." Tobias looked at me, his eyebrow raised. "In the bathroom." I finished, mentally smacking myself. I didn't even look over at Tobias, because I was not really for all of the ridicule that would surely follow.
Luckily for me, however, Andrew is satisfied. "Okay!" He says, with an air of dismissal as he turns his attention back to playing with Tori's hair. Her blue-gray eyes sparkle as they always do when he brother plays with her. Giggling happily, she paws at his hand as he playfully tugs on her hair and he tickles her belly with a silly grin plastered on his thin face. My children are adorable.
Our children are adorable, I amend as I feel a pair of muscled arms wind around my waist. Leaning into him, I twist around partially to press my lips softly against his jaw. The corner of his mouth lifts, forming an uneven smile, and his deep eyes ensnare mine. "I love you," Tobias murmuers into my ear. A slight shiver of pleasure works its way down my spine. I never tire of hearing those three little words.
"Me too." I say unromantically, ruining our perfect embrace as I start walking back to the kitchen. The splattered liquid on the countertop and stove have made a small pool on the floor, and the meager amount remaining sat in the pot on the stove, boiling like mad. An unpIeasant smell wafts through the doorway, suffocating my nostrils. The odor resembles a mixture of old, burnt laundry and overcooked vegtables. I throw a smile to my husband over my shoulder and quirk my eyebrows at him. "Who's ready to eat?"
