Detective Marino was running at full speed behind the escaping man, while Leo ran across the street to help the detective not lose sight of the runaway. The small streets and alleys were not helping the pursuit at all, but several police officers were already moving to block off the escape routes. Using his radio, Marino was able to block off a crossroads ahead, guiding the escape route of the foreigner towards an area where he could catch him. He indicated Leo to continue through the same street, without losing sight of the perpetrator, while turning towards a small street to the left. If he timed his moves, the runaway man would be right in front of him in the next crossroads.
The fugitive turned quickly to one of the alleys, avoiding the police's blockade. Marino was able to reach the crossroads before the man, and aimed his service gun. Leo, in the meantime, was running behind him as fast as he could, trying to block off his escape. The man, seeing there was a detective in front of him, and another follower on his back, drew his gun. It was of utmost importance to Marino to capture this man alive, so he ordered the man to put the gun down. They were in fron of a 4-story building, a small one. The runaway operative thought quickly, before his followers got any closer, and shot against Marino, not really aiming a whole lot. Leo, seeing that the man was shooting, aimed his gun trying to stop the man, trying to hit his leg. Upon firing, Leo hit the man's left thigh, but the man was faster, and was able to reach the entrance of the building, though he was wounded now. The bullet had entered his left thigh, leaving a small entrance hole, and a small exit hole on the other side. It was a clean wound, the bone was not comprimised, but it was hurting, and the man was not going to be able to use his muscles in an effective way. He ran with difficulty towards the stairs, while Leo and Marino were following up close. A couple of shots slowed down the pursuit, since both men had to take cover. The fugitive, reaching the rooftop, saw around him and didn't see any possible escape route, at least not one he was able to reach with that wounded leg. His spec-ops training allowed him to face several civilian forces, but from the way Leo shot, he assumed his background was military, so the man decided to hide.
- Alpha 1, this is Alpha 3. I need help. I've got two subjects behind me, and it seems at least one of them has military background.
- This is Alpha 1. Sorry Alpha 3, you're on your own. You know we can't expose ourselves to risks. Remember they cannot captuure you alive. We'll make sure of it.
- Damn it Alpha 1!! I need a distraction!
- Negative. Either lose them, or apply protocol 81. No more options. If you do lose them, I'll send you evac coordinates.
- Roger...
Alpha 3 knew he was not going to be able to lose them easily, but ending his life throught "protocol 81" was not something he was really fond of. He was able to stop the bleeding from the bullet wound with a coagulating powder, but the pain was still there, and his muscles were not working very well. He took from his left pocket a small automated syringe with a greenish liquid, and applied it to his neck. It was a perception enhancer, and a painkiller which would help him in the escape plan.
Leo and Marino reached the rooftop, side by side, each aiming his gun towards the front. They made a quick scan and didn't find the fugitive. It was clear as the sky that the fugitive was in hiding, but with so many small chimneys, and crevices that would work as hiding spots, they had to be careful in their search, unless they wanted to end up with bullets in their bodies. Leo took the right side, while Marino the left. They advanced slowly, while the operative was still about 30 meters behind a chimney. Marino decided to stop and call out a warning.
- Attention, suspect, we give you a chance to surrender peacefully. We assure you a just treatment and a fair trial. Come out with your hands up.
No answer. The operative calculates where the voice came from and got ready to face him.
