Blaze, lee and I were chatting quite happily on the way in; we didn’t expect what happened next. Beth came striding over to us, I could tell this didn’t mean anything good, the whole park fell silent, the group of year 8’s over in the corner acting all hard could tell a fight was going to break lose and they were all leaning forward. They would do anything for a chance at some excitement. Beth stood in front of me she looked me up and down her lips pursed as if I was some bad smell under her nose.

She slapped me.

The sound of flesh on flesh echoing around my head. The shape of her hand bright red on my cheek. The tears prickled in my eyes. The group of years 8’s went wild whooping and cheering. The girls from my year and shrugged and high fived Beth as she walked back to them.

“WHAT WAS THAT FOR?” Lee yelled at them. Blaze put his arm over my shoulder almost protecting me from the mean girls we were up against. I felt safe under his arm like he could almost save me from their mean stairs and slaps.

“she knows” Beth said glancing back at us.

“Hope? What happened? Who are they?” blaze looked concerned. I would be too if I was him, to him some random girl had just walked up to me and slapped me for no reason. But instead of answering him I walked over to their group. I could tell lee and blaze were behind of me and they would help me if this got out of hand. Beth had her back to me but some other girl in their group nodded at me to give Beth the heads up.

“you brought your little body guards with you? Who are they anyway? Don’t tell me you got your self an ickle boyfriend to protect you, he didn’t do a very good job did he?” she mocked me

“leave him out of this” I said “how long have you wanted to do that Beth? Why didn’t you do it at school? I haven’t spoken to you in like 3 months I can’t have done anything more.”

“she can do what ever she likes nerd, how did you get a boyfriend I mean look at you, you’re pathetic and there are no reasons to like you” said Faye coming to stand next to beth

“Hope is a better person than you will ever be” said Lee

“hey wait, which ones your boyfriend? Lanky had his arm around you but ginger stands up for you, they’re just as ugly as each other so really it doesn’t matter” said Beth again

“they look better than you even if we do mash your face up” I said my short anger starting to kick in

“oh yeah I forgot you have anger issues’ don’t you?” said Beth with an evil grin “and there’s no June to take you away to save you from the humiliation, remember when we were friend ‘they’re not worth it hope’ well bottoms up big girl we are worth more than you”

“no-one is worth more than you hope” blaze whispered in my ear and I let him pull me away

“I’ll get you Hope Greene, beth yelled at my back”

“im sure you will beth, I am sure you will” I called back

“one day, in a galaxy far far away” called Lee, and we all laughed.

We all laughed in the face of something I was scared of.
