CHAPTER 1

Woke up to the sound of the most annoying thing in the world, alarm clocks. It's almost summer, I thought, realizing I have one more week of school and that it's my birthday today. So I got up, with a a smile on my face as I get ready.

I picked out my usual clothing for school - A plain, simple V-necked shirt, my outweared jeans and my old sneakers. "Hopefully, today would be like no ordinary day."  I said to myself as I looked at myself deeply in the mirror.

My name's Billy Montburg. I live in a small city called Beverlytown. I am now thirteen years young on the 8th grade. Described mostly as an awkward, curly brunette dweeb. I get tormented a lot at school to a bunch of jocks a few years older than me. Typical. I like to be treated like any MAN would want them to be treated. I think I'm really responsible for my age, but I envy .my older brother, Darren. I have to admit he's very good looking, 16 years old, he's an A+ student and everybody loves him though he acts like a total douche to me. I guess it's because he's now a jock or something. And I'm pretty much concerned of my height or you can say I'm petite and honestly, that's what bothers me the most. Well, at the fact that I think I can hardly do anything at all.

Time went by fast this morning, I thought, as I entered the cafeteria at school. Holding awkwardly a tray full of food such as vegetable salad, some milk and a chocolate custard as the jocks started approaching directly to me. "Happy birthday, you geek." the jock leader, Jake said as he took my custard away. The gang laughed hysterically as each of them messed up my hair, pushed me on the side and fell off my tray leaving me splatted of food all over my shirt . "Ekh!" I said gingerly as I tried to wipe it all off.

As the bell rang. I got up from my seat, went down the hallway and went straight to the school bus. As I reached back home, my mother surprised me as she opened the door, spreading her arms wide, hugged me tightly and screamed, "HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SON!!" she cried.

"Thanks mom." I said, forcing myself to make a wider smile.

"So how was your day?"

"It was... normal."

"That doesn't seem believable.." she said as she stared at the huge stain on my shirt. "Okay, why don't you go up to your room, change your shirt and come right back down, okay Billy?

"Okay, sure."

I went up to my room, looked for the most soothing music I own, turned the speaker loud as ever, as I searched for a good shirt and went back down.

But as I went back down, the lights were dim and I can hear a pin drop silence.

"Hello? Mom?" I screeched. Yes, I screeched.

Then suddenly, the lights were back on, someone turned on the stereo, the living room was decorated so quickly, the floor was filled with balloons and everyone popped up out of nowhere.

Okay, to be honest,  I was feeling a bit scared inside. Only the inside.

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY BILLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" everyone on the room gladly shouted.

"Wow, thank you. So much." I said as I see all my family grouped around me.

"Oh you're welcome. Wow, Billy! You're finally a teen" My mother said as she hold my arms tightly.

"Yeah." I scratched my head and forced a laugh.

"Grab a coat, we're going out and eating dinner, somewhere fancy." Her smile widen. "Your dad is paying."

"Fine by me!" I giggled. "Where are we going anyway?"

"It's a surprise." my mom winked.

After half an hour of my dad driving, I stepped out of the car, tucked my shirt in and forced my hands inside my dirty pockets. It was very chilly and windy.

Before I knew it, I realized I'm in to some carnival. Oddly enough, it wasn't very crowdy. There were just a few people. The first thing I noticed was a huge ferris wheel, a bunch of rollercoasters and a food court stall everywhere.

I couldn't do anything but smile.

"Here." My mother hand me some money. "Go buy some tokens and we'll wait here for you."

Quickly, I ran to the token stall and bought as much tokens I can get and ran back to them.

"Oh! Let's go that rollercoaster." I said, as I spot the first rollercoaster I see.

"Why don't you go with your brother." my mom said.

"Sure then." Darren replied.

I gave the worker 2 tokens and was about to go in before anybody grabs the seat I wanted.

"Woah there! Hold up." the worker interrupted. He pulled up his arm and pointed to the height sign. I noticed that I was a few inches shorter to the bar line. "Sorry bud, you're not tall enough."

"Oh c'mon! It's my birthday today!" I said, hoping he'll let me go.

"I'm sorry kid. I just can't do that."

"Tough luck, bro." Darren said as he's taking his seat and grinned at me.

Devastated. I went back to my parents.

2 hours or so, Darren decided to go to every rollercoaster there is. After seeing him go ride after ride, I couldn't help but pout, I was getting a bit hungry and so was my my parents.

"Come on Darren!" My mother said with her hand on her hip. "We're leaving now."

We went to some building but I couldn't see what's inside. It was just right in the corner of the carnival!

"Close your eyes, Billy." My mother put her hand on my face, making sure I'm not looking.

I can hear the door opened, and I can hardly wait! They all grouped inside and screamed, "SURPRISE!!!!!!!!!!!"

"This is where we'll be eating." She says.

My eyes widen. This is not what I was expecting, and not in a good way.

The place is decorated for a five year old! The stereo was playing some nursery songs, theres toy car pillows filled in every spot. I sure was surprised. I didn't know my family even thought this would actually make me jump for joy. I was getting sadder by the minute every time I stepped one more closer to the room.

"How do you like it?" Everyone smiled.

HOW DO I LIKE IT? I hated it. When will they ever know that I'm old enough. I'm not some cranky baby anymore. This is so not me. As that sentence ran over my head, I was getting teary. But as always, I couldn't do anything.

"I... I.." I said as I was searching for a word. "...love it."

I cleared my throat.

"I'm glad you do!" My mother said as she kissed my cheek. "Aw! I knew you would!"

We all settled down in a round table which by the way. all the furniture is very uncomfortable that made me feel much worse. Then there comes the workers marching with funny hats, hand in hand, singing the birthday song, walking towards me with one of them holding my birthday cake. I sighed.

"Make a wish, Billy!" My father said.

Ugh. I don't believe in birthday cakes. I don't think it works anyway.

But I know exactly what to wish for.

I wish everyone treated me like an adult. I said in my mind and blew the candles off after.
