Prompt: "If you're not nice, I won't let you in my blanket fort."
****

The keys jingle in her hand as she unlocks the ugly, green apartment door. When she walks in, she's bathed in the soft glow from the lamp in the living room that is in the middle of a giant blanket fort. The couch and stools from the kitchen serve as the base while the sheer, black diaphanous canopy from their bed hangs from the ceiling fan and walls. Twinkling fairy lights are thrown haphazardly and tangle with the canopy. Kate sees the silhouette of her husband sitting inside, enveloped by pillows.
"Andy?" She kneels just outside the makeshift door.
Andy is slumped against the pillows and Crow is settled contentedly in his lap. He raises his head to look at her, his face pulled down and fatigue lingers about his shoulders and chest.
"Hey, Kate," he raises his hand up a bit in greeting.
Kate hesitates going inside, not wanting to disrupt the peace and tranquility of his pillow sanctuary, she sits outside instead.
"What's wrong? Is everything okay?" She studies his face, "Can I come in?"
"Nothing is wrong, per say, but," he drags his hand over his face, "I just finished the second season of The Warriors of Earth and just..."
He struggles for a second.
"Why did Yanna have to die? She was going to get married and she was pregnant, and she gets shot by some rogue nobody? How is that fair?!" He balls his hands up and frowns, looking up at Kate sharply. "She shouldn't have died!"
Kate is silent for a minute before erupting into a fit of giggles, covering her mouth and slumping forward. "That's what you're so mopey about? A character from a TV show?"
Andy crosses his arms and pouts, looking away from her. "If you're not nice, I won't let you in my pillow fort."
Kate smiles fondly, pressing her lips together to stop herself from laughing. Her husband can be such a silly, little, doofus sometimes.
"You're right, babe, I'm sorry for laughing. That wasn't very nice of me. Can I come in?"
"I'll think about it," he replies.
Kate inches forward, grabbing the plastic, shopping bag next to her. "I picked up Chinese food on my way home. I'd hate to eat the dumplings by myself," she tempts, taking the container out of the bag.
Andy perks up a bit, "You got Chinese food? Did you get the chicken and broccoli?"
"Of course I did!" She chides him with a playful smile.
"I don't know, what do you think, Crow?" He turns to the slumbering cat and lifts his front paws up, "I think that Lady Kate can be allowed passage into our very cool fort," Andy raises our voice and moves Crow's paws around while the cat just blinks.
Kate grins and grabs the bag before scooting inside with Andy. "Why, thank you, Sir Crow?"
The cat meows and moves off Andy's lap to go nestle into the corner of the fort. Kate hands her husband chopsticks along with his chicken and broccoli while taking out her white rice and her container of brown rice. Using the Tupperware lid from Andy's food, she dumps some of both containers, mixing them together.
"How was work?" Andy asks her with a mouth full of food.
She rolls her eyes at him, "Work was good. I have to pick up some extra shifts starting next week because of Brit leaving on maternity."
Andy shrugs, "That sucks, but I mean, at least you're getting more money."
"Yeah, true. But I won't see you except on my days off."
He pulls out his laptop from behind him and opens up Netflix.
"Anything you want to watch?"
"Sleepy Hollow, please."
He moves his food to the side and pulls me onto his lap, making me squeal and hit him on the chest.
"You scared me," I tell him.
"Sorry," he murmurs, kissing the top of my head.
I smile and snuggle into him, "It's okay, I'm glad you're feeling better. I love you."
"I love you, too."
