Get your orders?" Steve asked, frozen in place. Of course Bucky got accepted and all he could do was gawk at the man in the suit. He tore his eyes away, continuing on with whipping his his hands off on his pants, busying himself.
"107th, Sargent James Barnes." Bucky leaned back a bit, arms open as if showing himself off. "Shipping out for England first thing tomorrow." Steve scoffed, looking down. "I should be going." He mumbled. Bucky gave him a hard look before his face broke out into a grin. One of those that reach the eyes. "Come on, it's my last night." A heavy arm was hefted around his shoulders, jerking Steve closer to Bucky. He could smell the other man; cheap cologne and sweat. He smelt sweet even if he didn't. He smelt like Bucky. Like home. "We gotta get you cleaned up " Bucky finished as he dragged a stumbling Steve out of the alley, legs still not right from the fight.
"why? Where are we going?" His eyebrows fell close together, taking the newspaper that smacked him in the chest. He slowly opened it as Bucky answered him with excitement of a child. "The future!"
-----
Steve wasn't listening. He had his hands jammed into his pockets as they neared a large crowd. He heard something of eligible man, New York and women. He scoffed his feet, mumbling to himself. "Hey Bucky!" His head snapped up. Of course it was a double date. How could it not be. All Bucky did was listen to baseball games and try to force women on him. "What did you tell her about me?" He asked, carding his fingers through his hair anxiously. Bucky shrugged. "Only the good stuff." Steve sighed. There wasn't much of that.
They stood there in the crowd, packed in so close he could feel hot breath on his neck. The perfumes mingled and made his head ache and stomach woozy. His date, pretty blonde, was taller then him and only had eyes for Bucky. He didn't blame her.
The air felt like it was squeezed out of his lungs as his eyes landed on Bucky's bright blues. His face was split into that goofy grin he's had since childhood, eyes crinkling. Bucky squirmed with excitement then looked back to the stage, Steve following suit for breif second. He had to admit, he was impressed. The car had floated. But Bucky was the one for Science, Steve was the art person.
He looked back to his friend, eyes traveling his face. Then he looked at the poster behind his head. Uncle Sam pointed right at him and stared at him. Steve sighed. Couldn't hurt.
Steve pushed through the crowd going to recruitment. He watched the man stand in the light, pride hung in his shoulders. "Come on, soldier." The women giggled, tugging the man's arm. Steve stepped up. To short.
He stumbled forward as Bucky shoved his shoulder. Of course he found him. Always did. "Come on, you're kinda missing the point of a double date." Steve scoffed his feet as he turned to look at his best friend. He let his eyes wander down the torso of the green uniform before looking back up. "We're taking the girls dancin'." Always dancing. That's how Bucky won dames over. He'd tip and twirl them around a nice floor with music while Steve sat back with his "date".
That's how Bucky won him over. The dancing. He noticed it years ago. Bucky moved so smoothly you would have thought he had lessons.
"You go ahead. I'll catch up with ya." He wasn't. He couldn't watch his friend dance with a dame. When he first found out, he thought it would be easy to push away. But no, the flutter in his chest grew and twist in his gut tightened. He even, most times, rejected the thought of being with a dame.
Then Bucky was giving him that look. That look that made him feel weak to his knees. The serious look he got when Bucky found him in a fight. The protectiveness in his best friend's eyes gave him hope because just maybe he wasn't head sick. "You really going to do this again?" Voice low, eyes narrowing. Steve's chest tightened and his throat clogged. Why was he so beautiful?
